touchy subject (selling threads here on RC)

just a reminder because I always get asked advice/questions on this subject:

*only reef related stuff for sale here, please
*be courteous (both buyer and seller) and make sure to stay in touch with one another- no surprise visitors or no shows
*it's very tough to sell complete reef aquarium systems- especially if you want to find good homes for your livestock. It's unreasonable to expect a newbie purchasing a complete system full of reef animals to know how to take care of them. For the sake of your livestock's well being (if for no other reason) please consider parting out

last of all, be mindful of a seller's feelings. Most of us love our reef animals very much and it's a sad day whenever one of us leaves.

i agree to all said above. Moving to a different board wouldn't solve anything.

It's happened to me a couple times now that people have shown interest in stuff and said they'd come at a certain time, and just didn't show up.. occasionally more than once (same people).. After that I heard that particular person did the same to several other people as well, and just now I read that he once again did it to someone else..

I won't mention names, but stuff like that is REALLY annoying and kind of ruining stuff for other people..

I've personally always show up when i said I would (a lot of people know this :)).. and I just wish everyone else had the courtesy of doing this...

On the bright side.... You guys are awesome.. Despite the above, everyone i've met has been really nice and friendly.. I'm glad to be a part of this community!.

Whats the point in setting up another form? This works great and it's central to the reef society. Don't move it. Save your energy. There is nothing you can do on another form that you can't do here. All sellers post for everyone to read. It goes how it goes and that's between those people who respond. If you don't like the people buying locally off RC then don't post it here. We have a great forum here at RC and there is no point in moving it.

  OP1 I blame you! You're going to get it at the old willow tree tonight!

That was a joke just so you know.

I have some other observations/concerns that I've been meaning to express based on what I've been observing in this and the STRS forum. Gary had the courage to raise this topic. It is important for especially the newer folks here to realize that there is some etiquette and protocol to follow on the basis of tradition if nothing else.

If one makes lengthy inquiries and shows interest in purchasing corals, one is certainly under no obligation to purchase. However, as a simple courtesy one should specify that they are no longer interested. Also, folks need to realize that posting corals for sale and responding to inquiries, especially for frag meets is a rather time intensive and laborious process. So it is important to not ask the same questions over and over with the same seller. Just as the seller needs to keep records, so too do prospective buyers.

Finally, another concern independent of buying/selling threads refers to writing style. I have increasingly noticed that some individuals write in a very abbreviated manner. This is not a text messaging system. English is spoken here. Not that there can be no abbreviations. But there should be some attempt to express a thought and to engage in some self editing. I don't mean to sound like a 7th grade English teacher but it is getting to be somewhat disturbing to read carelessly written and edited sentences. I realize not everyone here has equivalent education but I believe this is more out of laziness than inability. FWIW, JMHO:)

That's a common take on RC's selling policies but it really isn't accurate.

We believe, very strongly, that unbiased information is necessary for people to be successful with this hobby. When you've got people pushing product on the forums, you have no idea whether the information that you're getting is real or a product pitch.

That's why even our sponsors aren't allowed to discuss their product outside of their sponsored forum. There is actually a large number of sponsors that have been banned for violating our selling policies. They assumed that if they paid their sponsorship we'd look the other way; we don't.

Is RC a business? You bet. Supporting a free flow of unbiased information is what we believe will make it a viable one for some time to come. While other reef keeping boards have come and gone, we've stuck to our values. We're successful because of those values/polices; not in spite of them.

Cheers

thanks for taking the time to weigh in, Doug :)

I'd like to remind those that think that they (or the URS) would benefit from having another forum:

*one already exists (have you ever visited it?)
*there are other (locally based) alternatives to the URS website forum and the URS Forum on RC
*you are free to choose where you'd like to 'hang your hat'- create a new hangout if you'd like.

now could someone please explain about the old willow tree?

I definatley think there would be a real benefit to area club sub-forums within RC dedicated strictly to classifieds. That way we could segregate the meaningful conversation from the buying/selling. The main RC selling forum covers too broad an area to be of any value (at least to me), and I think that would be a nice addition.
IE: Reef Central Online Community > More Forums > Reef Club Forums > NorthEast Region-Reef Club Forums > Upstate Reef Society > URS Classifieds>threads

or we could police ourselves right here in this forum instead of creating more forums for us to check out and RC to monitor. This is the best option by far IMO. As it stands, I think RC is very kind to allow reef related classifieds in club forums.

If you need help deciding whether a thread is a selling thread or a meaningful conversation thread we definitely don't want to start up any meaningless banter threads
