Transfer of sps to diff system

So, I am doing the one thing I swore I wouldn't do, but prolly knew it was a lie. I am upgrading again, this time to a 150g. I have a 75 gallon now, and am a bit nervous about the transfer. Not only am i upgrading to a larger reef, but moving to a new home. I had hoped to set the 150g up and just move the corals over when i make the overall house move. Maybe thats a bad idea? Maybe i should reset up my 75g in my new place and slowly transfer over to the 150g. What you think?

Also, should i rinse the sand clean?

Any suggestions would be fabulous.

Thanks guys!

all at once, fast. new sand, ALL of the old water & rock. I'm in the same boat. but, mine is only twenty feet away. GL

Ive moved tanks more times than I would like to remember and the least stressful way in your situation IMO is to set up the new tank with new sand and as many rocks as you can live without temporarily and a decent amount of water from the current system. Let it run for at least a couple of weeks if you have the time. Longer is of course better. Just make sure the salinity and alk more or less matches and then just move them over.

2 weeks isnt really necessary if you do it well but you will want the dust to settle well and the longer it runs the better.

Treat the rock like it was coral for quickest transition to good water to ensure no cycling. Move it in buckets always submerged and get it into the running tank.

this is of course new dry sand...not live.

Better yet just lose the sand idea altogether and move some rock and water from the old system into the new and you are good to go, and you will never have to mess with silly sand again :D

good ideas

good ideas

i would buy new sand so no extra nitrates are released . by the way off topic how is the new milli doing the tri-color i would love to see how it is doing.
Roger
p.s. good luck on the move..

Argh!!! I have to buy new sand? Cant i just wash this stuff real well?

So far everyone votes i get the new tank up and running and make a slow transfer? rock first?

Sooo... I was hoping to lay tile down before i got the tank up... umm.. The people in my new house are still there, would it be wierd for me to knock on their door and ask them if i can start to lay the tile and maybe even get the tank in there... EVEN though we dont close for another 6 weeks?

and the acro is alive and well!

Oh, and its a 150 gallon and i am only 5'2'' tall, i HAVE to have sand b/c if i dont, i dont have a chance in he!! at reaching the bottom to clean it. =)

I would re-setup the 75 gallon reef and once you were settled in start the work on the 150 gallon.

It will be less stressful in the long run. A house move alone can be hectic, you don't really need the pressure of having to quickly make the transfer.

Do you already have the 150 gallon tank? 180 gallon (72"x24"x24") out of the picture?

Good luck!

id love to find a good deal on a 180g. i have searched and cannot find one. so, the best i found was a 150g.

But, u may be right, i think it would be easier to move the 75g first, but i am using the lights from my old tank for the new tank. Also, i am using my old rock too, which the corals are all attached to.

You just have to be patient they are out there. It took me several months to find my 180 gallon, when I did, I jumped on it. Got it at the price I wanted, with a black stand. I was very happy, patience is key.

On the move, honestly if it wasn't a whole house move I would say go for it. But a move is so involved I would want to have dedicated tank time without the distraction of moving. I would strongly recommend doing it later once you're moved in. Technically it is more work, since you have to setup the 75 gallon again instead of going straight to the 150 gallon, but for peace of mind and going at your own pace without rushing anything, I think it's worth the trouble.

Remember nothing good happens fast in our hobby. :) Food for thought.

Good luck.

Well i am lucky to own hardly anything. Everything i own, including the tank, fits in one room! So, moving my other items is not something i am worried about, plus i am hiring a mover. I am not stressing about moving my other crap.

but, i did learn today that i have a whole free week to move. I can move into the new place and have a full week before i have to be out of mine. also, i know the lady that is moving into my place, so i can prolly leave my tank here for a week or two. The tank has an ato and is fully automated, so i dont have to be here.

So.... what do you guys think of, setting up the 150 and spending the next 2 weeks doing the transfer. I got my hands on some old sand that i can fully clean and dry before i move, so i dont have that added expense.

so are you guys saying to let it run or is it better to drain the old tank to the new one and just move it all over?

just asking im moving a 75g to a 90g with filters in a diff room

I have moved many many times, even to different states. I just moved 2 months ago into a new house in 100+ heat. We moved all the furniture and a week later I brought the tanks (4) over. Would have had no losses if I hadn't forgot a bucket for about 6 hours.

If you can set up the new tank in the new house first, then that would be best. Leave room in the new tank to transfer some of the old water if possible.
