transfering sandbed

Master of my domain
wondering if there is any contrete tests done when reusing a 4" sandbed. Ill be moving a 90g tank and wanted to reuse the sb however other reefers are contending that by reusing the sandbed I will be releasing toxins and other harmful agents into my newly set up tank. is that correct>? or is it a scapegoat of others from personal ill proper planning and bad decisions?

Ok here we go,

I've moved plenty of tanks and DSB's around. I think its fine to move a sand bed. While moving it expect rotten egg smell and sulfurous smells. This is the Hydrogen Sulfide gas that's produced in the low to no oxygen environments in the sand bed.

After you transfer your sand bed, remember this was a livesand bed to begin with and you'll probably need to skim and monitor your conditions before adding your livestock back to the tank. All in all it should be a smooth transition.

Think about the livesand you get from the LFS, well our LFS keeps it in a tank that's about 30" deep! Full of it, so when you bring that sand home, wouldn't it release toxins? This here discredits anyone else's arguments or points. I know for a fact our LFS keeps their sand for a while...sometimes not selling any for 6-12 months at a time.

Just be sure to skim as there is going to be a little die off as its re-establishing itself. There also could be a 'mini-cycle' as the tank establishes itself again, so like I said above, test your Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates over a period of a couple days before adding all of your livestock back to the tank and you'll be fine!

thanks, its only 8 months old too so the amount of 'live' stuff might be alot less than if it were 2 or 3 years old. I was planning on doing a 30 percent WC when I transfer so hopefully that will combat any dieoff.

if you have any extra salt, i would recomend mixing up a couple of gallons of some low salinity water (just couse your gonna dump it out) and do a good syphoning when you get it to the new location. it will take care of some of the ditrius that gets loose. i did it and it worked great.
