Treat for flukes or get fish eating?

I have to say you are really stressing out an already stressed fish, let it settle a bit. The Bandit was newly arrived to your LFS. You then purchased it and put it in yet another new environment. I wouldn't expect it to eat immediately going through so much in such a small amount of time. The only Bandits that ate right out of the bag for me were the ones I received diver direct. Bandits going through the usual chain of wholesale pick up nasty pathogens and parasites. I agree with the previous posts that the fish has obvious fluke infestation, which isn't necessarily an immediate death sentence. Yes, do freshwater dips, once every 24 hours for no more than 5 minutes. I would also run Erythromycin.

I received a Red Sea Regal from an LFS that came in looking poorly and was acting like your Bandit. I freshwater dipped it every 24 hours for 4 straight days and ran an antibiotic. It started to eat after a couple days in antibiotics. Once it started to eat I dosed Prazi and Metro. Today it is thriving in my display.

Good luck, and remain patient and vigilant.

I did the second FW dip and after 7 minutes I took her out. She was scaring me, she came to the surface and was twitching for around 10 second intervals and then 20 seconds normal.

Is this a normal thing in a FW dip?

I have had fish that go nuts after a minute, and I have had fish that after 20 minutes look at me like they where a freshwater angel? I have had fish eat very well with being in QT with Prazi Pro.

Good luck with her Ray.

if she did have flukes, FW dips will leave holes in her body, which can get infected. so try to keep the water as clean as possible.

Just an update, the bandit still has not started to eat. I did the two FW dips on the first day and none since. I am trying to limit the stress and hope she starts to eat soon so that I can treat her with prazipro. She is not twitching anymore and she is swimming like a normal fish, just not eating like a normal fish. She stares at food and then swims right past it, hopefully it won't be much longer until she eats

Good luck Ray, I know how stressful waiting for a fish to eat can be. If you ever come across a medication called "gel-tek ultra cure px", grab it. (I believe it's no longer on the market?). It is a liquid "feed" that I mix with frozen foods.

It contains praziquantel, flubenol and metro and is an anti-parasitic. It also contains fish pheromones that entice feeding. I found this stuff works wonders as fish don't seem to lose their appetite like dosing prazi to the tank does. In fact, I do believe I get a better feeding response with finicky fish when I use it. Mysis soaked with it was the only thing my Rainfordi would eat, it wouldn't eat straight mysis at first.

I would send you some, but I'm hoarding my last bottle. If you find some old stock in a store snag it!

You know the rest, keep trying various foods until you find something she likes. Best wishes, I'm so happy to hear of another bandit "up north" :)

Thank you for the advice, unfortunately I did not find this product, I called a few stored but they had never heard of it.

Happy to say she just ate her first couple bites of food. She bit and spat out about 5 pieces of mysis. Then she finally ate I think 3 pieces, I will try again in an hour and see if she will eat more

congrats man. are you feeding it PE mysis ?

try hikari mysis, they are smaller and they seem to accept them better. Only Ken has it though ... BA and others cant carry it anymore !

Thanks for the help, yes right now I am feeding PE, I will go to Ken tomorrow and get hikari. Hopefully I dont leave with another fish

Yesterday she never ate anything, but today i got some live black worms which she ate right away. A few hours later I tried some spectrum pellets and now she is eating those as well. I am hoping this is a sign of good things to come. Prazipro treatment will be pushed back, I want to see her eating consistently for at least 5 days before I start treatment. Hopefully with in the month of February she will be introduced tp the Bandit in the DT

Hey guys. Sorry to mini-hijack. Who is Ken? I live in Hamilton, On and the smaller mysid would be better for my smaller fish. (They are all pretty small - trigger is only 4-5" and he is my biggest)

And back to the thread

Congrats on working so hard to heal the Angel.

I went to an LFS around here and one guy there actually said it wasn't worth treating my fish because it was a real PITA the tear the tank down. They either make it or they don't…..

Yikes.
