Treating with Vitamin C

I purchased mine from allhealthtrends.com. It is a dollar cheaper for the 16oz bottle. Not as cheap with that coupon but since that is a one time use it is something to consider in the future. Unless we get a deal worked out with iherb.

Pufferpunk thanks for the code i just ordered 2 things of "Sodium Ascorbate Crystalline Powder", been meaning to order them for a while now just been bussy.

I have been dosing with VC for about a week and my ph is now at 7.8 and Alk is at 21 dkh, calcium is at 490. I am using calcium ascorbate 100% buffered powder from iherb. What do I need to do????

I hope to hear back from them soon--I have to order some more too.
I ordered mine last week... should have it by Wednesday.... Hopefully they get back to you before I need to reorder...

My zoas look ok.. I just want to get more growth out of some of them...

I'm also thinking about changing the seahorse tank into a zoa only tank...
*wanders off to look for pics of zoa dominated tanks...*

pH is a bit low. 21 dkh doesn't sound right. What test kit are you using?

Puffer I have checked it about 10 times and it shows that high every time. I am using API test kit
Now... let me guess. You were trying to increase PH using an alkalinity supplement that say that it will stabilize PH at 8.3 or something like that, right?

Stop adding any supplement for PH or alkaqlinity, the vitamin C will bring it down although a water change with a low alkalinity salt would help.

99.9% of the time low PH is a CO2 problem not an alkalinity or buffer issue. Try getting better aeration in your tank with fresh air. Open your windows once in a while or hose some fresh air from the outside for your skimmer. Also try dripping Kalk as your method of supplementation but not until your alkalinity is back into a normal level.

My dkh has always been on the high side. But you are right I did add that magic Ph stabilizer. What is the best way to get it down without a water change I just done one yesterday. Can I add the airstone line to a power head and let air in that way? Will that have an adverse affect on corals?

I have plenty of flow in the tank but not sure I was'nt sure when he said aeration if he meant like adding the little hose with valve to a powerhead that causes the bubbles. I am more than willing to do what he says but am new to this. I am scared to go to bed fearing that everything with be dead in the morning. Thanks for the help

The issue here is double hit. First, how sure are you that your PH is that low? How are you measuring the PH? I also doubt your alkalinity level. It is so high that it should have precipitated already. I read you tested several times but did you do it with the same kit? To test the kit try testing freshly mixed salt water for a change. Newly mixed IO or RC will give you around 11 to 12 dKh and any other salt will give you between 7 and 8 dKh.

Second, With high alkalinity if you increase the PH it will precipitate. The CO2 in the tank is high because probably the CO2 content in your indoor air is also high.
Try aerating (airstone) a couple of cups of tank water outside for an hour or two then test the PH, if it increases then your indoor air has too much CO2 and you need to ventilate your house or bring air from the outside.
What I would do is reduce the alkalinity first if indeed is that high, yes water changes at this point is the only safe way, then try to get fresh air.
You can areate the tank with an airstone but may not improve the PH is using the same indoor air, think that your skimmer is alrady dooing a good aeration it is just that it is doing it with air ladden with CO2.
Is there a way you can get some fresh air to your skimmer?

I'd really like to know where the slime is coming from. This is the second time it has appeared while dosing....I was off the "stuff" for about a week or two and just started again about a week ago. Last couple days the rocks have been sliming a bit and it has been collecting in the 1st compartment of the sump. I really wonder what it comes from....

My best guess so far is that it is bacterial in nature, this probably fed by a secondary compound the vitamin turns into.

I added a powerhesad & it went away. Could there be an initial clean up of bacteria & then it goes away? Never had it in my main tank & the skimming has slowed a bit now too.

Oh I have plenty of flow to get it all worked up. It really does seem to hit any algae during this phase as well. I will keep dosing to see if it goes away, but this is the first time I remember seeing it in the main part of the tank (only saw it in the sump last time).

I have noticed an increase in RedSlim in my sump as well.

I have also noticed red slime in my sump on my chaeto. Luckily it's not on anything else.

My Cheato still wont grow either. I got a different type from ppurcell, and that stuff just withered away and died. *shrug*. The stuff I have hasn't grown in the 3 months I have had it.
