and so it begins...

and so it begins...

received my shippment of VC today and I have offically started dosing!!!
I have deceided to dose approx 1/16 tsp and will hope for the best keeping a close eye on all my residents...I have taken many pix of each frag/colony and will monitor each ones reaction to the VC...
wish me luck please... :p

By chance I found a local source for buffered sodium ascorbate,
it is made by a company called Now...... according to the label 1/2 level teaspoon is 1,690 mg. My tank is a 180 with a 30 gallon sump so should be around 190ish total... So for ease I was just going to round up to an even 200. The main reason for me starting this is A. better color and growth of my corals.... B. hopefully help knock down the nitrates.... and C. I have a tiny frag of what should be some large pink zoas. I was given them in bad shape allready but they have hung in there for at least 3 months, kinda shriveled and not much color but I know what their potential is so would like to revive em... will try to post a start picture of them later.

So if my math is correct( please feel free to double check me ) for 10 ppm I should be dosing 7,570 mg which would be 4.48 or 4.5 to make it easier teaspoons ??? I was thinking of starting with 1/4 teaspoon a day and raising 1/4 every 5 days, any thoughts???? tool little ..too much ????

Tom

speaking of pale sps..besides AA and feeding heavy,is there other products that we can dose along with Vit C like when using zeo or prodibio

ryno212 - Did you're SPS pale out after starting the V-C? And if so, has feeding more heavily/dosing AA had a positive effect?

I just started dosing AAs about 4 days ago, and the same with feeding heavy. I'll let you know if that helps. I was wondering if there would be some other products to help with SPS. Like the different ZEO or FM products to go along with LNS.

Here is a pic of my poor pitiful pink zoas that I am hoping to revive.

Anyone having issues with their filter socks after dosing this? I used to change them every 5 days. Now they clog in one day and i can't seem to get them completely clean.

How are you washing them? Yes, they will clog quickly, that is the end result of your nitrate reduction--they have to go somewhere. I never use them.

Good luck Tom, the VC should help those pink fellows.

Just by hand with cold water.

I will try removing them for awhile. I guess the skimmer will pick up what the sock doesn't.

Lots of folks have several & wash them all in the washing machine. I don't see why you couldn't use warm/hot water. You might have better luck with them after your nitrate is down.

I have several also, but I don't think the wife would be ok with me putting fish poo covered filters in the washing machine :)

for the thicker filter socks, throw em in the wash, cold water, on the largest water setting you have, extra rinse. you wont hurt the machine. also, depends on what kind of sock you have, the thicker type (wash by machine), or the thin type.....i prefer the thicker ones.

I have the thicker ones.

You can throw a couple cups of bleach in there as well and just set your machine to add another rinse cycle. Turn the filter socks inside out first though.

Finally got my Vit C today....added my first dose...hard to measure out 1/8 tspn! lol....so i figured i'd measure out a quarter, mixed it in one of my sealable specimen cups with some ro/di, and then just poured half of that in....seems like a decent system.

i'm doing this mostly for prevention and hopefully some growth. I like the idea of increased skimmate so i can feed a little more, hopefully i'll find a happy medium to keep everything, sps, lps, zoas, softies happy, I'll update in time.

Unfortunatly the second half of that cup will be useless in a few hours. The sodium ascorbate doesnt last long in water or exposed to light.
