Treating with Vitamin C

So,a sand bed is not as solid, for lack of a better word, as a semi permeable membrane? Gases can pass, sulfides, sulfates, salt concentrations, but not nutrients?

I think the biggest issue I have with the idea is that I'm not sure what nutrients we are talking about and why they would be in such great concentration in the DSB on a tank that is being carbon dosed. Maybe if the tank has been running a long time and allowed to chance the to have a great concentration of nitrates or phosphates and then carbon dosing is used a quick fix and then stopped, but it seems like it wouldn't be an issue in a tank that is eased on and off dosing and ran for an extended period of time.

Exactly, ludnix. My observations were from my own tank. It is old and has grown sps for some time. After initially trying carbon dosing and given the licence to feed more by prevailing literature,I found more baterial colonies inhabiting the surface of the bed. Using vodka initially, then other carbon compounds later, the nitrate would go near zero. The phosphate per hanna meter would always hover.01,.00. I reduced feeding{I wasn't throwing chicken legs in the tank} but still had the problem.
I removed the top 1" of a 3" sandbed and so far that problem has not returned. Since then I have began the Z****T system and nitrate levels have hovered at 2.5 constantly. It is still a form of carbon dosing but at a slower pace in limited quantity. They do not like DSB's and will tell you the system doesn't work well with it.
I was contemplating the VC simply for the experiment of its nitrate reducing potential, not the anecdoctal healing powers. I rather suspect, suspect being the keyword, that somewhere in the system I'm using VC is in the mix.
Bacteria are amazing creatures and though I haven't the witherall to prove it,Ithink they can unlock bound phosphates and nitrates in the DSB. Different saturations would it seems to me lend itself to slow moving release {movement} of the nutrients. It's all good and I wasn"t trying to ruffle feathers.

I forgot to mention that I replaced the 1" of sand with new sand.

I have read this whole thread start to finish over the last few weeks and I must say it would have only been a third of this had it not been for having to repeat everything a billion times...lol!:lolspin: Great thread!:D Good job Pufferpunk and Jeff. One thing that I was suprised no one suggested to combat the rising dkh might be to run unbuffered VC... or a mix... just a thought since that seems to be the only real problem or concern with either of the Cs. Obviously you would want to monitor it very closely no matter what.

Great thread! I read about half so far. Just ordered two bottles. All parameters in my tank are good for the most part with the exception of nitrates. I'm mainly dosing to reduce nitrates and get better color out of all my corals. I have about 18 different types of Zoos and Palys that I'm really looking forward to seeing some difference in. I plan on going slow and I'll make sure to take some before pics.

Do any combination you want. I have dosed vc and sugar at the same time. The key is start low and go slower then usual.

Started dozing last night. Originally I had planned to start with a 1/4 tsp, but I opted to go even slower and start with 1/8 tsp.

While it drove the nitrates down low my alk went up to 7.0 using the sodium ascorbate. Talking to Randy he suggested using a non buffered VC.
