Treating with Vitamin C

Will dosing vitamin C out compete macro algaes for nutrients?
Yes, my cheato has been gone for years.

Do we know if it provides the same type of bacteria which the corals can consume from say the bio pellets method?
Similar, but every form of carbon dosing boosts different bacteria.

Anything to watch out for with a mixed reef with macro's while dosing vitamin C?
I run a very mixed reef with great results.
I run a continuous water change system. I have a litermeter which changes out 1.5gpd throughout the day, will dosing vitamin C be ok with this type of water change system in place?
aAs long as you dose by hand, 2x/day, not in the top off water.

Been dosing for 3 weeks. I am a believer. Getting good growth from ph's and cars. Got 5 babies for both during that timeframe.

I dosed as follows.
5ppm week 1
15ppm week 2
25ppm week 3

Should I increase to 30ppm next week. If so, then how long can I maintain 30ppm continously? Or drop down the ppm?

No issues prior to dosing. Just very slow or no growth for one month straight.

So glad I committed after reading all those pages and pages and pages of postings.

If you had no issues before starting to dose I would start cutting back and just use a maintenance dose of around 4-5 ppm daily.

Is it okay to use a product that is pH neutral?

In my opinion (or lack there of) since it is a pH neutral this would not have any effect on the pH of the tank already. Is this a correct assumption or would this cause the opposite effect and actually lower my pH leading to a mega disaster for my tank?

They are so many suggestion and opinion that Im lost never ending thread.I have 65 gal how much VC have to add for start 1/4 and how many times a day,Im lost too much info guys

Ok, I've tried to read as much as I can from this thread.

I guess my main question is are the results gained from VC dosing resulting from anything more than simple carbon dosing? IE, does dosing VC do anything different than say, sugar?

Each type of carbon dosing encourages different bacteria to multiply. I feel that VC works better than other carbon dosing for several reasons:
-you cannot overdose. As long as you ramp up the dosage slowly & use a skimmer to remove the excess waste, you can dose as high as 100ppm without harm to your inhabitants.
-Unlike other carbon dosing products, VC has been thought to help boost collagen in cells. This means, healthier corals & fish, better growth & color.

I find it extremely easy to dump in a tsp every morning & evening into my sump.

The VC I use (sodium ascorbate) has a pH of 7.1. That's pretty close to neutral.

So basically its carbon dosing with a slight bonus, rather than a health supplement with a bonus of carbon dosing?

I started dosing for it's health effects & the bonus for me was it also worked as a carbon source, lowering my nitrate/phosphate to 0.

taggin along.....i've decided to give VC a try..sorry for the noob question ...im still very confused on how much to add to my nano ...34g solana ...say 15 pounds of LR...inch of LS..plus a small CPR HOB refugium with lots of chaeto..some LS in there too

im not sure of the water volume....is it 25g..or 30g?
please help

im ordering the iherb one.
so how much do i add?

thanks in advance

I understand that is why you originally began dosing, but is there any evidence that dosing VC is doing anything more than a standard carbon? Couldn't all the purported health benefits merely be from the cleaner water caused by the carbon source?

What is it? What made you think it has a neutral pH? Does it list the ingredients?

It specifically says on the label that it is pH neutral. It does not mention anything about Buffered. I will have to list the ingredients when I get home...but I think it is only sodium and sodium ascorbate.
