I think a gold maxima at either of those depths would be okay, if you want a blue/green max you would definately need to go for 9". What where you thinking about ordering? A derasa on the sandbed would be fine too and still very beautiful. I keep mine at a depth of 24 inches but under t-5's.
What white? If you mean on the shell that is new growth. If you are talking about the mantle of the clam that is just the color of the derasa, it's actually more cream than white.
FWIW:
