Trip to the Shedd - interested?

It has been suggested by more than one person that we try to do a SLASH trip to the Shedd Aquarium.I'm all for it but need to know if anyone else is and if so, how many.

Something to think about is the expense. This would definitely have to be an overnighter so there would be a motel expense involved. Mike ( StupidsReef ) looked into motels on Sunday and said the a cheap(er) motel would run about $100.00. We MAY be able to arrange for a group rate if enough people were to commit to going.

That being said, MarkK96 said that he would be able to get us a club rate for admission and would also be able to arrange for a "behind the scenes" tour of the Shedd. Sounds pretty cool to me!

Let's hear it ...... would you be interested in something like this or not?

We were thinking of touring some of the LFSs after we arrive on Saturday and then hitting the Shedd first thing Sunday morning.

We would be looking for a "tour guide" for the LFSs. I think we may have found him Tony! :D

might i suggest this:
stay outside of chicago, like Juliet (spelling?)
buy a weekend pass on the metro(like $5?)
could safe a lot on parking and hotels

I definitely recommend Rod's reef, home of the famous Onyx clowns and Rod food, he's a super nice guy and well known to many reefers...he is about an hour away, but well worth the visit.
Other nice stores are coral paradise, Shotank, Sea Schor, and ocean's floor. They usually have a great selection and the best prices but are all in the suburbs. So what i'm saying is, if you want to see the good stores, you should be willing to drive an hour or so out of the downtown area :)

Metra $5 for weekend pass...
Joliet - Not where i'd wanna stay...I would recommend Geneva, metra runs right through there and it is a MUCH nicer area and hotel/motel prices should still be pretty cheap
Parking and hotels in the city are a be0tch, so this would be a good idea, Plus you would be near many LFS's.

That might be a better deal, especially since gas is incredibly expensive. Is the amtrak any faster than just driving? Don't know anything about this public transportation thing...where I'm from we still use horses to get around

It would be a good deal except for those who want to bring their kids ( unless kids ride for cheap ).

I've always wanted to take a train to somewhere so I would enjoy it. Wonder if we can take the train to the area that Tony mentioned. Sounds like it would be cheaper and better if we stay outside of the city.

Tony?

amtrack sounds like a great idea, but let me warn you, it is completly unreliable.
my inlaws are in peoria and we used to use amtrack to get there and for them to get here. they used to be punctual. recently it's gotten typical to have a 3 hour+ delay. many times it's so late they will send you by a bus instead. i personally recommend against it. we've had very bad experiences with them.

lateness with amtrack is a definite possibility, it's usually due to waiting for freight trains to pass, made me late to montana by about 3 hours......but...taking the train is fun, they have the dining cart and viewing lounge, plus...you get to drink! :)
You would probably take amtrak into chicago and then take the metra out to geneva if that's what you plan to do....

I am up for a trip to the big tank up north.
Agree with Dert, Amtrack will be lucky to get us there in a timely manner. Then you are stuck there without a car. You save money on gas, but spend it elsewhere. /shrug.

Amtrack shares it's lines with Freight, and freight gets priority.
Last time I took the train to Chicago it was a 12 hour one way trip.

"viewing lounge"???

What is there to view going through central IL? I'm originally from the Champaign area and used to take Amtrak from carbondale to Champaign my first year of college. There was NOTHING to look at out the windows on that trip.

Trains are fun and typically easy but SLOW compared to car. It would probably require taking extra time off work to make time for the travel. Maybe there is an overnight train (?), but IME sleeping on a train is kinda gross.

I am definitely interested, depending on when it would be. Hubby has never been to Chi-town and has been wanting to go.

I grew up in a little town south of Champaign called Villa Grove. I spent every summer from the summer after 6th grade until my last year of high school detassling corn for Pioneer Seed. My house was on the edge of town...I could throw a baseball and land it in a cornfield. Yeah, cornfields don't excite me much. :D
