Triple-S Fish Ranch - 1700gal 164” x 48” x 56” SPS peninsula build

Very nice house and tank build. I am tagging along to see how you like the cannons.

Hi, I am new to your thread, but I am trying to design a sump, similar to yours in some ways. I was wondering how you are sending water to your skimmer. Are you using one of the bulkhead that you are draining the sump or are you pulling from one of the bulkheads that you have the extra filter socks? Thank you.

very nice build
wow awesome

mhsmith, I plan to start out by feeding the skimmer with one of the drain lines from the display tank (1.5" full siphon). However, if I have trouble maintaining consistent water level in the skimmer-- as I did the last time I tried a drain pass through-- then I will feed the skimmer from the sump using an Abyzz 200. Skimmer water returns to the sump through a side bulkhead which feeds into drip plate carbon chamber for stripping any residual ozone.

let me just start by saying your tank build is inspiring.

i was looking at a popular sps tank on youtube ( vivadi) and he uses 5 cannons on a tank roughly 50"x30"24" will you have enough light with your twelve cannons?. really looking forward to seeing this tank lit.

Thank you, laredo300c. Yes, I do have a concern that this might not be enough light. This is why I have had wiring run to allow adding 4 additional canons later. I've also run the wire for one 1000W Radium to deploy over the center of the tank if I feel I need even more light or that some corals are not responding well to the spectrum provided by the cannons.

Like said many times already, Wow! Awesome build! I'm going to tag along on this one as well. I live in Houston and would gladly drive the 4 hours to visit if you ever host a tour. :D

Thank you, Bad LS1. I will most definitely hold an open house or two once the system is up and running.

September Update

September Update

A busy month of construction, but not much worthy of pictures in the aquarium areas. Media room crews took over the living space for the past month, so aquarium progress was limited to fish room and electrical.

In the fish room:
  • Flooring completed
  • Mold Tough drywall installed and painted with marine epoxy
  • Room lighting completed
  • 80 amp electrical service installed
  • 3 HVACs and one dehumidifier installed
  • 24" utility sink installed
  • 12' x 9' x 30" deep wall of cabinetry was built off site

In theory, crews will be out of the fish room and I will have full access by end of next week to start installing equipment.

On the equipment front, the big skimmer arrived, and I ordered the QT stands and tanks.

Fish Room HVAC and Skimmer
The skimmer is big. It is about 25' feet away in this shot, and the guy next to it is 5'8". Two wall mounted mini splits for the fish room, A/C for the display tank on the far ceiling, dehumidifier on foreground ceiling.

Biggest Crane Yet
Setting the backup generator required the biggest crane yet: able to reach 200 feet with a 5000lb load on the end. This crane came with 2 additional 18 wheelers just to carry the counterweights.

48kW Generator
V8 truck engine in the generator for the aquarium equipment and 15 tons of HVAC.

Maybe I'm missing something. Given the size and number of screws on the top, how will you clean the neck of the skimmer?

Probably hire someone and let them worry about it.
I would hate to clean that monster.

WOW. I'm practically speechless (and definitely jealous). :) great build. I'm in new braunfels so not too far from Austin. Are you a part of the Austin reef club or MAAST? Again, amazing build and I can't wait to see where this goes.

Fabulous thread! LOL. Texas size everything. Not one but two cranes required in this build, the second bigger than the first. :) I'm loving every post, pmrogers. Thank you for sharing!

I had the same thought. This is one of 2 points where the design of the MRC is not as good as the RK2 it replaces. On the RK2, the lid was pressure fitted and could just be lifted straight off after disconnecting the automated wash down. The RK2 also had a fresh water washdown for the exterior of the neck and collection cup. The MRC has a recirculating automated washdown for the interior of the skimmer neck, but nothing for the collection cup.

However, the MRC has superior design where it counts the most: needle wheel bubble generation, and a bubble plate to reduce turbulence in the reaction chamber. For maintenance I will permanently remove all but two of the lid bolts since I don't need a water tight seal for the lid.

I want to know how the crane operator could see what he was doing?
He couldn't. He had 3 spotters relaying hand signals. It was pretty impressive to watch him place it within about 2 inches of the target landing spot with no line of sight and only hand signals to guide him.

Thanks, ramseynb! I am a member of ARC and will be posting there when I'm ready to host an open house for the tank.
