Tropic Marine BIO-ACTIF Salt?

Who is making a call? I myself have done 2 water changes thus far and I've reported my observations thus far. I bought a 200g bucket so I'm definitely giving it till then when I'll make up my mind as to whether it's worth it or not.

Just try it for 3 water changes. Most of the people who like this salt saw improvement after 2-3 water changes.

Thats exactly what I did. I am part of the Zeovit community and many Hobbyists from those Boards live by TP Salt mixes!!! I was using RC Salt since forever but finally decided to give TP a shot.

I haven't done any REAL testing on the TP Salt mixture, but just IME I've noticed that the salt mixes rather quickly. I purchased the small box to determine whether I liked it or not, and just recently finished the package after approx. 3 water changes. Dunno if it just coincedental, but the SPS pieces that haven't grown within 6 month period (torts, nasutas, setosa) started branching during the 3-4 week interval of using TP. Nothing drastic, but surely noticable!

Just my 2 cents!!! I plan on sticking with TP salts from here on out!

It's cool - if you guys are seeing noticeable results in that time frame, then that's great. Maybe I need to look into this salt myself.

Romanr - I hear you - if I spent that on a 200g bucket, I'd be finishing it out too.

I'm going on my fourth waterchange and for me the big difference is better polyp extension and more vibrant colours.

If you ask me the amount of colour improvement I would give it a very unscientific 20%. To my eye my corals look 20% better...Totally opinion.

So far the only facts are it did not cause an algae bloom even with increased LED lighting and adding organics to the tank via the salt. Also coral health is at least as good with TM reg.

I'm hoping more will post results without a significant light change. As my better colours could be due to my DYI LED setup. I wish I had a true control to measure the results.

I think that TM put in the new salt same stuff what they sell under 'Reef Actif' name;
Tropic Marin® REEF ACTIF performs a unique dual function as an adsorber and bacterial nutrient in saltwater aquariums. In doing this it assumes a central function as the link between inorganic nutrients and the biological population in the saltwater aquarium. REEF ACTIF is suspended in the aquarium water where it bonds with both nutrients and water contaminants making them available as nutrients to bacteria and other animals that feed on dissolved organic material in the saltwater.

Perhaps this is reason why so many people see improvements.. if that substances improve water quality then corals react on it, just like carbon dosing..

I would add that this salt is tailored to active protein skimming...

It creates more hydrophobic compounds and bacteria which are removed by the skimmer.

By that you mean that it provides some organic carbon dosing like adding a little sugar or vinegar does?

I don't see why one would want to incorporate that into a salt mix, myself. It leaves you totally unable to optimize the dose, except by changing your water change schedule.

Here is the literature from Tropic Marin. So at least these are their claims. Randy this salt just became available in the US but it has been around in Europe and apparently has won a lot of people over. Maybe you can get them to send you a bucket to test!

Tropic Marin BIO-ACTIF ® is the result of intensive research into the causes and long-optimal coral growth and the factors affecting the welfare of fish. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sind eingeflossen in neue Produkte. The lessons learned have been incorporated into new products. Ergänzt um einige bewährte TROPIC MARIN Produkte ist ein neuer Ansatz für die Meerwasseraquaristik entstanden. Complemented by some good TROPIC MARIN Products is a new approach developed for the Marine aquarium. Darin wird einem konstanten Nährstoffabbbau durch aktive Förderung der Mikrobiologie und einer dynamischen Kontrolle der Wasserchemie besondere Bedeutung beigemessen. This constant Nährstoffabbbau through the active promotion of microbiology and a dynamic control of water chemistry is often highlighted. Als Ergebnis schafft BIO-ACTIF Pflege und Wachstumsbedingungen so nahe an der Natur wie kein anderes Aquariensystem. As a result, BIO-ACTIF provides care and growing conditions as close to nature like no other aquarium system.

BIO-ACTIF offers marine aquarists significant advantages:

• The rapid recovery in the coral care, even for beginners;
• Advanced Riffaquarianer can without excessive burden very difficult and sensitive species to maintain, so far were considered to be untenable;
• Shared care of corals with very different care requirements, such as kleinpolypige and grosspolypige stony corals, together with leather corals with good growth and best conditions for all species;
• sponges and algae to grow more difficult under the nutrient-poor conditions of the usury BIOACTIF approach without and give the Wohnzimmerriff additional accents and a natural appearance riffähnliches;
• Active monitoring of pH and carbonate enable constant growth of corals, Kalkrotalgen and other Kalkbildnern;
• Active skimming and removal of suspended pollutants and the reef aquarium can always shine in the brilliant colors and perfect clarity

It could very well be a great mix. I'm just trying to keep some perspective on the claims. :)

such as kleinpolypige and grosspolypige stony corals

My two favorites. :D

The website is in German so I guess google couldn't translate a few of the words.
Are you going to MACNA Randy? Maybe we can corner the TM guys and give them the third degree about their salt and their claims!

alright here is something from an American site.

The revolutionary new synthetic sea salt which combines maximum purity in terms of its components with the protective and growth-promoting action of bioactive substances naturally found in the sea. They form effective protection for the mucous membranes of the fish whose improved health is clearly reflected in their increased levels of mating and reproduction.

Corals respond by displaying even brighter and more vibrant colors. The extent to which both stony and leather corals enlarge and open their polyps is unprecedented. Indications of the improved conditions seen in the corals are greater growth and stronger tissue. They build up reserves which strengthen them and make them less sensitive to unavoidable fluctuations in their surrounding conditions.

At the same time BIO-ACTIF SEA SALT encourages the breakdown of pollutants in the water which is evident in the brilliant clarity of the water after every change. Regular use of BIO-ACTIF SEA SALT maintains optimized conditions at a consistent level over the long term.

It is never too early to add Tropic Marin BIO-ACTIF SEA SALT to the aquarium and, if added when the tank is filled for the first time, it will guarantee healthy microbiological development from the outset and the best possible preparation of the water before the aquarium is stocked with fish and corals. This effect is revived and prolonged each time the water is changed. Changing up to 15% of the water on a weekly basis will sustain the quality of the water at a level which is conducive to the well-being of fish, corals and other invertebrates.

and another.

Tropic Marin is introducing another salt mix onto the market with their BIO-ACTIF salt mix. This new synthetic salt is said to promote growth of bioactive substances and provide protection for the mucous membrane of aquarium fish, thereby making your livestock healthier. Corals are affected as well, displaying brighter colors and opening their polyps more.

While making livestock healthier, BIO-ACTIF also promotes the breakdown of pollutants and excess nutrients in the water, leading to superb water clarity. Tropic Marin suggests to perform weekly 15% water changes with this salt mix in order to maximize its effectiveness and promote the breakdown of unwanted "œpollutants".

Below is a list of all of the benefits seen when using Tropic Marin BIO-ACTIF sea salt:

  • Rapid success in coral growth, even for beginners.
  • Advanced reef aquarists can grow even very challenging and delicate species which have always been regarded as impossible to keep.
  • Corals which once seemed incompatible because of their different demands in terms of care can be cared for together, with all species enjoying good growth and ideal conditions. Small polyp and large polyp stony corals can be kept together with leather corals, for example, without their combined care being detrimental to either group.
  • The low-nutrient environment also allows sponges and complex higher-order algae to grow without running wild, adding their own natural and authentic touch to the indoor reef.
  • Active control of the pH and carbonate hardness is conducive to the sustained growth of corals, calcareous red algae and other calcifying organisms.
  • Skimming action for the elimination of contaminants and suspended matter provides a permanent solution to cloudiness, allowing the reef aquarium to shine in full clarity in the most vibrant colours.

growth-promoting action of bioactive substances naturally found in the sea.

I have no idea what they add, but that description would fit vinegar and vodka as well, since acetate and ethanol are found naturally in seawater and are bioactive and promote growth of a variety of organisms, including bacteria and zoox. :)

No, unfortunately, I don't have the time available to go to MACNA.

I've been using this salt on my ZEO tank for almost two months now and love it. I noticed better colors and polyp extension four days after making the switch. Colors continue to improve by the day and I'm seeing new growth on all SPS corals. Even my wife looks better since I switched to this salt.
