TRUE Western Australian Personifer Angelfish on LA tonight!!!

LA is claiming that the 2 LA DD Personifiers are the first 2 in the US...

And that is just plain bull****

Now, this Personifer I speak of was one that was alive and kicking in the 800 back in the late 90's (1998/1999) so it may very well be that these are the first collected and shipped to the US in a long time, but they are surely not the first to be in the aquarium of the US since aquarium keeping began.

Ours came direct from the diver.

I hope those that do purchase these specimens post pics when
they get bigger and their color fills in.

I bet some will change their tune on these guys :)

First True Personifers ever offered for sale on the internet as a WYSIWYG specimen.

then it needs to be labeled as such. anyone not " in the know" could be misled.

i also agree with melan-true personifiers look alot more vibrant imo.

It was only a matter of time before this happened......

I don't know the full story, and Kevin Kohen, Copps and others would be better able to comment, butttttt, I'm thinking the one's in the 80's and 90's were illegally collected, or laws and regulations have changed since then. I would think someone in the US has/had one at some point, but I don't think anyone will question these are the first available through a reputable retailer.

Reading the listing of the fish more carefully, its advertised as the second ever "offered for sale", which is a fair way of saying it as I'm sure any other true personifiers in the US were private sales.

Actually, this is the second one offered by LA DD, the first one is already sold.

I doubt this will happen. Heck, at this point, we're lucky to get pics of any fish. I know sometimes people get down on the mods here, but I wish there was a forum *heavily* moderated against these price point opinions, or at least filled with less incendiary comments on *every* *single* expensive/rare fish thread.

Yes, I get that its an open board, you can express your opinion or dont read it, yada yada yada.

I imagine there are some beautiful tanks lurking here on RC filled with expensive, rare, beautiful fish that we'll never see.

Here is a novel idea based on your post. Since about 90% of price point disagreements are in regards to LA Diver's Den specimens(coincidence?), why not move these thread to the LiveAquaria subforum of DFS if people are becoming that upset over pricing? There are several posters in this thread that become a bit too touchy when anyone has a differing opinion on DD pricing. In fact there are some that immediately go into attack mode (see the other True Personifer thread). As silly as it sounds, I sometimes wonder if these same posters are not just shills for the company.

Anywho, in regards to these fish, I think they are spot on with their pricing. I do admit that I have disagreed with some of LA's pricing on other fish in the past. I also agree with your statement that there are many beautiful tanks we will never see. I don't necessarily think it is due to people becoming offended by some random posters having disagreements over price, but more to the fact that these people don't frequent these message boards. (I have a neighbor that has a gorgeous FOWLR with high dollar fish that has never heard of Reef Central!!!)

Now, let's get back to talking about these True Personifers. And again kudos to Kevin Kohen for acquiring these fish. :fun4:

Is this in response to someone's specific post? Your post is just so completely random at this point in the thread....In regards to Personfiers and Meredithi, they are not really known as a difficult fish to keep. Someone with some experience on how to QT properly, the ability to provide a large enough tank for the fish to thrive long term, and the paper to buy the fish could likely care for these fish without much issue.

Just go with the ~f~l~o~w~ my friend  In regards to Personfiers and Meredithi, they are not really known as a difficult fish to keep. : They are stubborn eaters and pretty susceptible to marine ich.

PS, your avatar gives me goosebumps in the scared way.....:eek1:

I usually tend to go with the flow...... for only so long.

My avatar is from Blade Runner. It is Rutger Hauer as the replicant Roy Batty in the best scene of the movie. I assure you, there is nothing to be scared of......

I feel the need to comment on this post. I don't care about the cost of the fish, but I DO CARE that people are bashing the true Personnifer Angel. Have any of you seen a True Personifer in full front mask? If you do, it will take your breath away. The vibrancy of the mask is so much more apparent on the true species rather than the Meredithi.

We had a full male blue masked Personifer in our LFS 800 gallon system years ago, he remained in the system for quite a while, and he was huge, and his mask was spectacular.

For those of you who cannot understand the difference in paying the extra money for the Personifer, I would first see in person the adult version of each fish before making such statements.

A Personifer is much better looking as an adult IMO.
As this is the first/second specimen offered for sale in the USA I think it's fair to say that 99.9% of board posters will not have seen the mask in real life. This also goes for the people probably looking to buy the fish from LADD. That being said we have seen it in pictures, so we have a fair idea of what to expect.

Honestly I think people seriously allow rarity to influence their opinions on beauty in a significant manner. If you showed This fish to a novice next to half a dozen large more common angels this would be one of the last picked out of the lineup on looks alone. Now we know it's rare, it is valued more highly, but I don't think that we should use that as an excuse to pretend that it looks better. It's being sold for rarity, not looks. If it's easier to justify the price by pretending it's the prettiest fish to ever hit private aquaria, whatever floats your boat.

Side note, just tested the theory with my wife. Showed her adult pictures of four large angels, this was the least favorite. Not even close, and she knows nothing about the availability of any of the fish. I think most of us would experience similar results if asking other non-specialists.

I'm not saying that this fish could not look nice in an appropriate tank, with the right tank mates. I'm saying that for less money I think (and most people seem to think) you could get a better looking fish, with equally interesting character. Or at least a very similar looking fish.

I am not bashing those who choose to buy this fish, as it's their money and they can do what they please with it, but let's be honest about why this fish is so interesting (rarity) and not try and make excuses to justify our wants and needs. I would pay more for some fish for other reasons, and I can't say everyone agrees with me, but I like to think I'm honest when explaining it. I'd pay more for a pair of Fu Manchu lions than a pair of dwarf fuzzies. Many people would not agree with that, but it's what I like. I don't need to pretend that the Fu lions would be more active (unlikely the case) to justify my decision.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally think this fish is a real beautiful fish. Its up there in my list of beautiful fish. Lets just drop the whole pricing thing and get back to what this thread is really about.

i think this is a good looking angel
the stripe on the tail make it even beter looking
But to big for my tank (190g) so i am saving a space for a conspic
