trying to raise clown fry

Ok i started a phyto culture aout a week ago and i am noticing like chucks/peaces of algae floating around. My clowns just layed eggs today so i will try to keep you guys updated. I was just wondering if the algae peaces are normal

I get them and they are a PITA. Not sure what causes them as some other people don't get them. What did you use to start your phyto culture.

Just curious why you asked. Can the type of fertilizer cause this?

s this bad to the culture? Like does it affect it in any way?

I am getting chunks in my new culture I started with a FAF disk as well. Just shake it daily it'll be fine. The chunks will lessen with time.

Did you add the gel from the disk to start the culture? If so, that's the chunks and it's fine

I kept getting big green flakes in mine.

Mine were the same as FB. No Gel. I think its dead algae from the disk.

Could be. Try straining it through a coffee filter when you go to start the next bottle, that will get those chunks out for subsequent cultures. I wouldn't worry about them in the current one.

ok thank you. also do you have to top off the water in the cultures?

I don't top off for evaporation. It gets used too fast for that to matter However, I do top off for use, i.e. drain half for feed and refill with fresh media (SW with f/2) and harvest again in 2 days.
