Tunze 9010: Can't decipher instructions

I plan to put it in the sump, so I'm looking at the "operation in a cabinet filter - preparation" instructions on page 35 of the manual. It says "The 'sleeve below the cover' (1) is placed below the 'cover with sliding unit' (2)." I don't see anything in the box that looks like "cover with sliding unit", and even if I could find it, the pictures aren't clear about where these parts go.

Can somebody explain how to put this thing together?

Nevermind. The instructions are indecipherable, but if you stare at the pictures long enough and pull parts off the skimmer, you can start to figure out what steps were left out of the instructions. I've never seen such poorly written instructions before. Hopefully, the skimmer itself works better than the instructions do.

Now how do I tell if this thing is working? I've plugged it in, opened the air regulating flow, and nothing has happened?

Also, how do I keep the output pipe in place? There's nothing there to keep it from sliding out and falling off?

I think I've got the output pipe in place. I found a part that connects to the pump that seems to connect it to some tube in the skimmer. The body of the skimmer fills up with water, but there's no foam or bubbles whatsoever. Shouldn't there at least be some bubbles in the water inside the skimmer? Turning the air regulator doesn't do anything. Can somebody help me?

Depending on the age of your tank it could take up to a day to start seeing bubbles or foam. According to the instructions it could be up to 72 hours but it only took ours a few hours.

Ok. Since I can't seem to find it in the instructions, can you please explain where the air hose is, what motor it needs to be connected to, and how?

Perhaps in the future, whoever is responsible at Tunze can completly re-write the manual to something that is actually useful.

Thanks.

We live in a world where most instructions are in Engrish and legalese so I hardly see these as illegible and unintelligible, dense and technical and in three languages yes but it is all there, with pictures. You remove the bottom cover and pull out the pump, there is an airline connected to the front nozzle, this is shown on page 46 of the manual I have, revision dated 11/2005.

I'm not trying to be difficult here. I'm just frustrated that I've spent money on your product, and can't seem to get it to function. I would think that that's a pretty understandable frustration. I think the idea of making your manual more clear would be helpful to people like me who have spent hard earned money on your product. It's just a suggestion. Take it or leave it.

Perhaps it all made sense in your 2005 manual, but the one I have is dated 4/2007. On page 46 there are indeed pictures, but they show cleaning the skimmer. The page before that is about ozone connection, and the page after is about weekly servicing. As I'm sure you can imagine, none of that is particularly helpful in figuring out where in the manual it discusses this air hose, or how and where it should be connected.

In the manual, I have, "Operation in a cabinet filter - preparation" starts on p. 35. Perhaps I am wrong, but I was assuming this referred to in sump installation. That page doesn't seem to say anything about the air hose. Neither does the next page, "location in the cabinet." I don't see an air hose depicted in the pictures either. I only point this out because it should explain my frustration with the woefully inadequate manual. Even in the section "operation in the aquarium - preparation" or "location in the aquarium" I can't seem to find anything about the air hose. Maybe the sections on "operation" are the wrong places to look for installation instructions? But I don't see anything else in the table of contents that would suggest how to put this skimmer together or get it working properly.

I'll just go and tinker with this expensive box some more, and if I don't have any more luck tonight, perhaps someone, you or anyone else, can provide some helpful suggestions. If not, perhaps you can point me in the direction of a US number I can call for further assistance.

Thank you.

Ahh, what a helpful manual! Let's not include assembly instructions, but hope the user can figure it out from the annual servicing/disassembly instructions! Perfect!

/sarcasm

The bottom line is someone is trying to help you at 10pm and you are being sarcastic. Nearly 1000 other Americans were able to figure this out from the same manual. It isn't perfect but it seems to suffice.
