Tunze DOC Skimmers

It should start skimming in most instances within 24 hrs. It takes a week though to really get broken in and to its optimum.
 
the 9010 is starting to look like the one for me. it will leave me a good sized area for a refugium.

if the water level in my sump is over 11 inches would i want to hang the skimmer from the edge or would it be better to make a stand to keep the output tube above the water line?

You could do it either way, either set it up for in tank use without the stand pipe and hang it from the edge or build a platform and set it up for in sump use with the pipe.
 
Just my $.02, but I found the platform method to be problematic.

If I bumped the skimmer, it would move on the platform (eggcrate cut into ~5" X 12" sections and superglued together for the correct height). It was difficult to keep the skimmer vertical and the bottom plates would slide out and reduce the skimming efficiency.

I ended up buying the magent holders and set the skimmer for in-tank use. I couldn't be happier.

Any users of the 9010 that have used it for atleast 6 months on a tank 75 or larger want to chime in if they are still happy with the skimmer.
 
I have a 9020 in my sump, and understand that the skimmer is operational at a water depth between 3.9" and 11". My water depth is usually kept at a steady 6". Does the skimmer do any better at a particular water depth (higher or lower)? I could adjust my sump water level easily.
 
As long as the skimmer is submersed within the stated range of water depth it doesn't really matter.

The vertical exit pipe controls the water depth within the skimmer.

The depth really only matters if you have it set up as in tank. If you have the standpipe connected for in sump mode, the solid base on the bottom, and the sump resting the bottom, then you should be fine.
 
I have a 9010 powered up for about 24hrs now. Love the silence! However, there are microbubbles getting past the sump baffles and I'm wondering if I could adjust the water inlet to restrict flow. I remember the instruction manual saying to keep the inlet fully open when using the sump kit. If I still get bubbles after a week of break-in, can I go ahead and adjust the intake?

Also, can I fit vinyl tubing into the rear outlet hole to submerge the exiting water? I'm trying to eliminate all causes of bubbles. Did I mention I don't like bubbles?

Give it some time the majority of the microbubbles will go away though it may take a few weeks. You could try a hose but this may require lowering the water level as the obstruction could cause water to back up into the air intake.

The quote is from June 2006. What do you attribute the no water changes to? The 3166 filter? The 3179 bio reactor? I'm gathering items for a 75G primarily LPS tank. The fish stocking will be low to med. and I was planning no sump and a DSB but your setup has caught my attention. I have been looking at the 9005 skimmer, but now see the Reefpack 500. What are your thoughts?
 
In Germany, fears that disposed of waste saltwater were an environmental pollutant nearly legislated the marine hobby out of existance a couple decades ago. Tunze and other European companies responded by developing filters that are essentially miniature sewage treatment plants and all components working together allow the aquarium to be successfully maintained without water changes. Besides that, water changes can actually be detrimental as they do tend to result in osmotic changes that more sensitive animals cannot endure. I have since changed my approach slightly and change 10% per month. I do this because I found that the trace elements are depleted and additives tend to shift the ionic equilibrium, especially many calcium additives. I use supplements at half the recommended dose and only what is essential. It is not any one component that makes this possible, it is a skimmer, bio reactor, mechanical filter, carbon, phosphate remover and a low population density all combined that make this possible and to really keep to no water changes one would need a calcium reactor and sparing use of supplements for trace elements to keep the ionic balance more or less in check.
