Tunze DOC Skimmers

Yea, sorry about the mix-up..........the reply was meant for "flatlander".
rdanamorton,
As for the 9002..........I havent heard of anyone using one yet. I say why dont you just be the guinea pig for us and just try it out! The price is right.........and i would think it has to do a decent job........it is after all a Tunze!
Let us know if you try it out, and how it performs.
Later.............Herbie

Hi,

I own 4 DOC skimmers and they are good for the size. I also have a Deltec MCE600 on my 12g nano and it does a great job. The Tunzes wet skims so if you use them on a small tank you might have problems with salinity unless you replace skimmate with equal part of salt water. Overall they are not in the same class of a comparable sized Deltec or H&S but they have a much smaller footprint and are reasonably priced.

Hey tunze skimmer owners....

do you need the cleaning kit that tunze sells to clean them? i noticed and asked marine depot, they do not carry the tunze cleaning kit. is it needed?

how are you cleaning your skimmers?

I use the Tunze cleaning kit, its like $8 or so. If you use the foam extractors on your DOC skimmers its pretty handy to get them clean - otherwise any long handled brush should do.

My DOC9010 came with a brush set. I have not found a use for it, though. The cup and reaction chamber are one piece and very easy to clean at the sink with a paper towel. The hydrofoamer is supposed to be self cleaning each time you pull the collection cup, and the instructions claim that full disassembly can wait as long as one year. That remains to be seen...

thanks for the very thorough cleaning thread. i'll save it for use in the not too distant future (i hope).

there was no mention of the cleaning kit really, so i guess it's not necessary.

well my skimmer came with a brush (which i use to clean the cup).
The body of the skimmer cant really be cleaned as it doesnt open up, the only thing to do would be to soak it all in vinegar (as mentioned in the thread)

I have question

I have question

My Tunze 9015 has one minor problem it wont skim unless I take out the the blue screw on the air inlet entirely. I have it in sump, with the sump kit, I took the whole thing apart recently to make sure all was working, and it is, but am I missing something? I have it about 10+ inches of water. Any advice?

thanks
David

i dont know. my 9015 doesnt skim as mush as i would like either. on my 200gal system, it barely pulls out 50mL/day of wet skimmate, and i need to clean my glass about every other day so there are nutrients in the water. there must be some way of ramping these up as ppl with 9010 seem to be happy with them. i am considering buying the smaller cup, but Roger doesnt think it would make it skim more aggressively.

Gillies I wish you didn't live so far. Maybe Aq Arts will set one up for me to check out. I hated my MCE600, it did pull skimmate, but I had tons of problems with it.

Those new Master DOC skimmers introduced at Interzoo look sweet also.

I run all my DOC skimmers with the screw out. In terms of keeping the glass clean - its been my experience that the DOC's won't keep your glass clean for 8 days or more like some of the bigger skimmers. If you are cleaning every other day its not pulling out enough IMO. For example on my 12g with the MCE600 - heavy fishload, all SPS - I can go for about 12 days between glass cleanings. I have a 9005 DOC in a 20G tank and that can go for about 4-5 days before it needs to have the glass wiped down - and that is with a smaller bio-load. I have a DOC 9010 on a 55g LR curing tank and it does a decent job. Having said that I'm in the process of switching out my DOC's on my larger tanks because I'm looking for better performance - I have to wipe the glass on those tanks every 3-4 days and thats with a medium / small bioload. One thing I have noticed is that take whatever the manufacturer rating is and take 70-80% off the rating. The MCE600 is supposedly rated to over 120g but I wouldn't use it beyond a 30g tank.

i also have a light bioload and want to add more fish, guess i'll have to look for a more powerful skimmer then. i just love that the DOCs are so small, simple, and silent.

yup, fuge with chaetomorpha.
i actually used to run skimerless before this skimmer (a few months ago)

Fliger,

I got mine at Aq Arts. Been doing business with Kingsly since the late Eighties. I don't know who lives farther away, you or me!

I read one time a thread discussion with Anthony Calfo about skimmers. One thing that really stuck with me was his suggestion that skimmers be placed directly in line with water coming out the overflow, as this surface water contains a high percentage of what we all want to get rid of. Anyway, because of the limited sized of my sump/stand, I was never able to place my previous Aqua C EV120 or the Deltec MCE600 in this fashion. I always had to compromise in this regard until I found the DOC9010. Now, while I still stay this skimmer is the best I have owned for many reasons. perhaps some of the consistent performance I have experienced is due to its' small size and ability to be well placed. For this reason, I would suggest to anyone with limited space to check it out.
