Reefing On My Mind
Team RC
Ok, all you 6055 owners... I'm thinking about ordering a pair, but I'm looking to get some reviews from some people that have purchased them... Are you happy with them??? Pros/Cons... Would you buy them again???

I just received mine today from Marinedepot. This is the best powerhead I've ever seen. I also got it with the singlecontroller and the photo cell. Dead silent , adjustability is awesome and the flow is tremendous!!!!! Really cool in my little Redseamax.

Mine are somewhat noisy, and they cannot handle the length of my aquarium (160cm), but other than that they are fine..

Thanks for the feedback!!! I'm more concerned with noise issues and problems with them starting/starting backwards like the 6025's/6045's... 160cm is a lot to cover for these pumps... How many do you have??? I plan to put 2 x 6055's on my 7095 with my 2 x 6000's inside my 120g...

You don't want to have them stop or they make this clicking noise upon startup, very annoying. So this fact takes away a lot of the features/options of the 7095 controller.
They do move some water but they are NOT "dead silent" as stated above. Maybe me and "ESPENIG" just have bad 6055's, (maybe when Roger gets back he will have some thoughts on the noise / hum and what is "normal") Mine are still too new to give you reliability feedback.

Mine has never startet backwards, so that problem might only be on the 6025/6045..
I have two 6055's on one side and one 6000 on the other side, and to be honest the 6000 moves much more water that the two 6055's. So I'm actually replacing them now with a 6100 instead. They are small and neat, but in my opinion they are best suited in smaller tanks..

I have 2 6055s on a 72g bowfront with a controller and have 2 6025s on my 40g frag tank. They make no noise. Not sure what 2Turtles is talking about. With the 7095 controller on the various 'wave' settings they drop down to 30% of full power and never shut off completely, so there is no startup noise. Maybe there is an option to shut them off but I've never used it. Mine were noisy for the first 48 hours and after that you can't tell when they are on.

I don't think the controllable ones can start backwards. The 6000s and the 6100s are that way. Tunze stopped manufacturing them with the brakes in the impellor.

I have one of each in my 75.. a 6055, 6045 and a 6025.. None of them make noise. Not even a little unless you put your ear to the tank. Have had no problems with any of them and I got mine in the first shipment months ago. The only problem Ive had with them is the mounting bracket. The little tabs break if your not careful. Broke 2 so far and roger has sent out new ones the next day for free. They are also redesigning the bracket to fix the problems they have had. Other than that, you cant get a better prop driven powerhead. Ive tried the hydors too. Got rid of them and replaced them all with nanos.. I also like how the tunzes are the same size. You cant look in my tank and tell me which is which.. The hydors are all different sizes.. IMO, you cant go wrong with the nanos...

Let me explain further the problems I am seeing with them. First the original post was do you like them, would you buy them again? Pro/cons? All I can report is my experience with the two I have. Mine are not completely quiet. They hum. I think it relates to an impeller imbalance. My biggest complaint is the clicking at startup which really limits what you can do with them using the 7095 controller. Since they click at start up you can't or don't want to shut them down. That takes away a lot of the program options on the 7095. The other problem with the 7095 is you can't get away from the "pulse" mode. This means with the 6055's I have, I get to hear the HUMMMMM ---- hummmmm ---HUMMMMM --- hummmm as they change speeds. Yes you can turn up the 1a -2a adjustment to match which "hides" the pulse, but then you have eliminated the night time mode of the controller. Seams to me that I keep taking away features of the 7095 to compensate for deficiencies in the 6055.

They are a nice looking pump and they don't detract from the aquarium so for looks I will give them a high rating. The clicking limits a lot of the function of the 7095 controller (unless you don't mind the click) And the HUMMMMM, well maybe I just got some bad 6055's. There should be a way to turn off the pulse mode on the 7095 without giving up quiet mode at night.

They can chatter a bit on start up but as far as a hum or more than a brief chatter I would disassemble the pump and clean the magnet/disk. There is a stainless steel disk under the drive magnet and they use some vaseline in a pretest in the factory and occasionally the parts gum up from this and just need to be wiped down.

I have two 6055's and one of them definitely has a louder lower hum than the other. Neither one seems as quiet as my 6101's.

I'll try Roger's advice and disassemble the louder one.

6055 and controller

6055 and controller

OK, I am deciding between adding a 6055 on a controller and a 6100 in my tank. What are some of the features that cannot be used on the 6055? It seems if you turn off the 6055, there is a clicking on startup, (I have a 2 6025's and a 6045 and these clicks don't bother me, they are very brief). Does the 6055 ever start in reverse? If you use pulse mode, can you not use nighttime mode? Any information would be appreciated, as I am about to make a purchase in the near future.

The only 7095 features I don't like using with my 6055's are Interval 1 and Feeding. If the 6055 is completely off, it "clicks" every 20 seconds. YMMV.

Never seen mine start in reverse. Pulse Mode works fine, nighttime mode works fine.
