Turn Over Rates For SPS

For 6 mos I have had a 105-110x TO rate in my 4x2x2' 120g SPS/zoanthid tank.
Before this, I had a 75x TO and that worked well also. Before that, was a 55x TO in a 90g with a SSB, and the improvement after the move to a BB 120g with 75x was impressive. Surprisingly, the zoas showed the most improvement when the flow has increased, and thats due to the lack of settled detritus on the zoa mats, under the open polyps. I say this because I used to frequently have to blast them with a turkey baster when they'd look under-the-weather, and it would make them better to get cleaned up.
The difference between 105x and 75x hasn't shown itself yet, except for less detritus buildup, which was expected.

It has a Sequence Hammerhead and a Dart on CLs, an Eheim 1262 for the return, and 2 Tunze 6000s that pulse between 70/100%.
150 corals in there, including a few clams and a dozen LPS(Trachy, Lobo, Blasto Wellsi). So far, so good. Sorry, no pics lately.

I experienced the same with my 120 4x2x2 I went from my mag 12 return and ampmaster 3000 closed loop @ 35X . Later added a 6100 for a total of 60x things improved keeping the same types of corals . Once again since there was noticable difference I decided to 2 more 6100 streams and saw a greater improvement . I am sure 1 more would have done it but the 3 really do a good job especially with my new aquascaping.

Now the tank sits @114 most of the time . My streams are on 100-30 every 5 seconds or so while the closed loop is static flow.

CL - Dolphin 3000 ~ 3120
Return - Dolphin 4500 ~ 3600
3 - 6100 Tunze ~ 9525

One more Tunze and another Dolphin then I'm done, maybe. :D

Changed...

58g SPS Reef

Mag12 - 900 gph (with head pressure)
SEIO1100 - 1100 gph
SEIO1500 - 1500 gph

Total flow - 3500 gph

3500/58 = 60.34 turn overs per hour

I'm usung a Mag 24 for my return. I use four Tunze streams, a 6200, two 61's and a 6000. Also running a wave box, which appears to be a 6200. Actual turnover after a generous head loss deduction still approaches 166x.

Thinking about changing my 58 to a 50g acrylic next week. There I will have the following:

Reeflo Hammerhead - 5800 gph (closed loop)
Mag9.5 - 600 gph (return, figuring head loss)

Total flow = 6400 gph

6400/50 = 128 turn overs per hour

This is about ideal. :D

4780gpm in a 90gal which is about 53x
2-seio m1100
2-seio m820
2-MJ 1200
return pump after headloss is about 350gph (mag 12)

i have a question about those with over 100x flow.

1. Do you have any problems introducing new fish. I can't seem to get my fish to live. Perhaps i should turn off my eductors for a couple hours when i first introduce them?

2. Also do you keep inverts, i seem to have lost most of my snails and hermits. What are your thoughts?

3. Do you run random flow? I don't see how a wavemaker with even MJ1200's would make the slightest bit of difference. Plus it is just that much more clutter.

How do you keep the heat down with so many pumps in those small tanks? I just set up a 30 cube with Eheim 1260, 1262, skimmer, recirc Ca reactor...and with the lights not on its a constant 85 degrees. This is the smallest reef I've ever worked with, and I just set it up like I would set up a 150...but the heat...

Haha...I guess to top it off, a chiller goes on. Dang, I could've set up a 120 for the price of this 30.

1. I have had problems keeping green chromis, banggai cardinals, and with firefish since I increased flow.
In my system, the Hammerhead flows under the rockwork, and some of the larger fish get battered at night as they sleep within the rockwork. I have scrtaches on my yellow tang and Copperband butterflyfish sometimes, and have seen the hard time they have at night when I spotted them with a flashlight.

2. Cleanup inverts don't last very long IME, I seem to have to replace them every two years. Besides that, your hermits are eating the snails most likely. I don't keep hermits, only cerith and astrea snails.

3. Controlled Tunzes

2 sets of 6100 + 6000 streams alternating &
900gph from sump / ~120 gallons in a 180g tank (after subtracting coral, rock and glass volume!)
I'd guess ~ 50X ....on the low side for this group, I guess!

Well,

In my 125 lps/sps system I have :

Mag 24 return=~ 1500 gph
4 Maxijet 1200s=1180 gph (on a Red Sea Wavemaker Pro)
2 Seio 820s=1640 gph
2 Seio 1100s= 2200 gph
Total= 52.5X
I think I would like a little more flow actually so replacing the 820s with 2600s is a likely option.

30 gallon oceanic.

Quiet One 6000 = 1400 w/ head (closed loop)
Mag 9 =820 w /head

74x...

What kinds of fish you got in there and how they dealing with the flow?

All of my larger tanks I've never had a problem with fish and flow, but in the 30cube I have (ehiem1262 CL-0 head and 1260 return-5' head) the fish all fight like crazy to stay in one place.

New tank!:D

53g Custom
Mag12 Return - 900 gph w/head loss
Hammerhead - 5800 gph closed loop

Total - 6700

6700/53=126.41

I was also thinking...

53g Custom
Mag12 Return - 900 gph w/head loos
Sweetwater High Efficiency (SHE2.4) - 4200 gph closed loo[

Total - 5100

5100/53 = 96.22

Really want to be over 100x so I am trying to find a bigger pump than the SHE2.4 with lower amps like the SHE2.4.
