Turn Over Rates For SPS

Iwaki 20RLXT as return pump mated with 6 locline outputs @600gph/4 feet

2 Tunze 6000 on Multicontroller @ 1850gph each

75 gallon SPS only tank..... 57X turnover but sure seems like a lot more when you see the tank and its inhabitants.

~40x in my 90
Eheim 1262 return to 2 lockline outputs
pcx 40 on CL with 2 penductors
2 MJ 1200's aimed along the bottom/back of the tank

In my 75g cube I have 54x when the puls is on and 86x when the puls is off. I also have 10x from the returpump from sump. (64x and 96x)

Normal I guess for an SPS tank - 69x.
180/
2x6100 - 6340?
Sequence blahzeblah - 4500gph
Iwaki70 CL - 1500gph

Sean - 100+ your fish on steriods? :D

Nah, Chevron Tang LOVES it!
LMB, is fat and lazy, rocks back and forth on the rocks all day...bum!

Hot me back if you wat that Pavona...if not give me clearance to ship it out. :)
I am in no ruch but I don't like to undercut people.

Sean,

Ship it if someone else wants it. I've run out a room with a shipment that will be here next week.

Your the first and only orange and white so far - thank you. It's a big piece.

What does a Dr. of Phrenologist do?

Ok I don't like the term "turnover rate", as I take that to mean how much you have going through your sump. I have about 5x going through my sump, with most of my flow coming from a couple streams and a closed loop Mak4. 92 gal cube.

120 gallon

T4 return pump, at 4 foot head ~ 800 GPH spits to two Penductors Rated at 20 GPM each = approx 2400 GPH

Seq Dart Closed Loop OM 4 way ~ estimating a conservative 2600 GPH. May be higher

2400+2600=5000 GPH/120 Gallon = 41 X flow

Still thinking about some Seio's 1500's
Maybe i will wait till they come out with the controllers

  • 29G
  • Mag 7 return: ~350gph(est.)
  • Three (3) SEIO m620: ~1860gph
  • Total turnover: ~76x

One thing I'm not comfortable with in all these calculations is the fact that no one accounts for inefficiencies and "funk" in your pumps, powerheads, etc. I personally knock 20% off when figuring out turnover just to take into account the calcium deposits, slime coat and overall funk that build up on anything that's in your tank. Granted when you clean your streams or whatever the flow goes back up but how long does that last?

I started thinking 10% but 20% seems more reasonable - it's also an excuse to upsize your equipment :D Anybody with me on this?

Hey Everyone.... Seeking advice....

I'm planning a 15 gallon sps reef and can't decide between a single SEIO m620 or a MaxiJet Model 600 Wavemaker System (480 gph - 160 gph x 3 maxi 600s). The seio would take up less room, but it might be overwelming in such tight quarters. The Maxi Jets might produce a more natural current, but what's everyones opinion???

Thanks, Harry

Harry, I would think the SEIO's produce a more "natural" current, they are very broad unlike the maxijets. I have both, and yet I'm having a hard time explaining it. maybe someone else can chime in. I vote for the SEIOS, but the one model up :)

Hey Travis,

Just hooked up the mag 9.5 on the 20L, so with the MJ900 and 2x microjets thats a total of 55x
