Turn Over Rates For SPS

my soon to be 180 will have the same turnover as my 120 since i have had great success with my 114x.

180 will be

3x6100's 2x6200's and my mag12 return pump =118x before return head loss. If I feel more is needed then I will add one more 6100 .

Just a few thoughtsââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦

Turnover, IMO is not the best way of describing the water motion of a tank. It may be useful for filtration, (ie sump to tank) however, its effect is limited in the tank itself (a 3000 LPH pump aimed into a wall of a 300 Ltr tank, has 10x "turnover", but is fairly useless for the coral. etc etc).

IMO whats more important is the velocity and variability of the water motion.

-Surge (the Wavebox/Surge tank -back and forth

-Turbulence (Sea Swirl, Tunze Stream on Random) -just the Random Swirling of the water

-Laminar flow (return, normal powerhead) uni-directional flow (some turbulence is caused by Laminar Flow, but generally not much)

Whats ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œbest for the Coralââ"šÂ¬Ã‚? Well, that depends on where the coral is collected, as they all have special flow requirements.

For my sps holding tank (nano 18g) I use a Tunze 6060, Eheim 1262 CL, and some other Ehiems,

Anyway. Total "turnover" is about 170x/hr. High veolicty for the sps sites. No fish.

We need to remember that coral use the flow for:

-Bringing Food, and flushing wastes

-Gas exchange (CO2/O2)

JMO!

I only add more flow if corals respond to it that is what has taken me to 100+ .

I need to make a movie of my tank so others can see the 100X isn't too much and my corals don't trash around :)

Those that have seen it in person can verify :D

I would like to see this...

It would be my first so it may take a day or so to get it done , transfered from camera and then hosted.

Im at 50x in my 200 gal and my fish blow all over the place... so do some corals

7' tank 2x6100 1x6000 iwaki md 70rlt. my tank would explode if i ramped up to 100x turnover

30 gal total, display portion is about 16gal, I have a mag7 2 mj900 and a mj1200, about 1450-1500gph.

I agree with the dude from Australia majesticangelfish. I have 20x turn over on a 225
3600 gph cascade pump running 3 1" sea swirls
mag 18 as my return

What would you guys recommend the turn over rate be for a 72 gallon reef mixed LPS and SPS be?

I run Mag 12 with three 1200 Maxi jet pumps under the reefkeepers alternating currents.

Currently I would have

3 x 295 = 885 Maxi-jet powerheads
12 Mag = 1120 With head pressure loss

2005/72 = 27.84x

If I add the Tunze 6060, I would add another 1600 gph

3605/72 = 50.06x

Would this be appropriate for my size tank? As it is I am getting good flow all over the tank and I enjoy the concealed look of not too many powerheads in the display.

Thanks,

Mike G

I found that it needs saved first then it will play . But if you choose the open option for some reason it doesn't work ?

First time I tried to "open" it and it didn't work.. The second time I "saved" it to my local PC and then opened it and it worked fine...

Anthony Calfo recommends 20x turn over for soft corals and some LPS and about 40x to 60x for SPS...

So where do I fit in with a mix of the two???

Come one, now I know there are some reefers out there that have my size tank and could give me an idea....

Thanks,

Mike G
