They are just rare. Or hard to collect. Probably some bragging rights involved too. Clarions were recently captively bred. Still not as bad as peppermint angels for 15-20.000 though.

Do people then look to have other Reefers come to their home to see the fish?

Or is it all just for yourself in a way?

if you can afford to buy a 3500 fish, i don't think you really care about the price tag. plus dont woman buy 5000 dresses and up and only wear them once

3500$ is 1000$ overpriced for the clarion but to answer your question a lot of people. It's not to have others come over and see your fish. It's the passion you have for the fish... Some like expensive cars, watches, bottles of wine ect... We all have vices

I agree. Some vices are more expensive than others. $3500 is only moderately priced for good koi.

I was going to reference koi going for 100's of thousands and I think I read a few reports of them going for seven figures...

Koi is a competition with large cash prices. They travel and show those fish.

Does that happen with Marine Fish as well?

And here I am still trying to get the wife to go along with $200 for a gold flake angel ......

I'm glad I don't have to have that talk with my wife... Getting a Bandit and crosshatch male next week and my wife quickly got over that.

Lucky me I am the holder of the purse strings. I just do not tell him what they cost. I have a young golden angelfish. Good luck on getting tbe one you want.

That peppermint is gorgeous!

There are some issues with Koi that are not true for marine fish. A male and female are selected based on coloration and genetic makeup. When they are bred, the number from a mating is considerable but those are then culled. After a few years, when the coloration becomes more obvious, they are culled again. I have a fair number of them in the four figure area but those are inexpensive compared to the champion koi that have been shown and won championships. Five figures is common. My koi have bred indiscriminately (that is, it is not clear who was father and who was mother) but the number of good ones resulting is very small. I only have two resulting from a spawn that may be desirable, but I won't know of a couple of years yet.

When a Koi wins a competition is there a cash prize? Or is it all bragging rights?

I always thought it was a money game but not sure now.
