Two Fish LFS $3499.00 & $999.99

oh and your wife knows what you spend on these tanks. trust me. everything you spend she spends the same at her stores once she finds out haha

my wife is getting smarter also. the whole "oh I got that coral onsale for 30 bucks" does not work no more....
:D

I am the odd gal out here apparently. I buy plants, expensive ones, but no dresses. I have not bought one in about 15 years or so. And I do own up to the purchase price if caught red handed so to speak. My fish tend to live a good long time. So I can justify it. :lolspin: Justification is the key. :lolspin: I justified my newest purchase, 140 gallon, by batting my eyes and saying I must have it for the copperband I have needed for years! :lolspin: Guess his putting his 1965 mustang in a custom finishing shop also helps. :D.

Koi are gorgeous. That culling sounds really heartless if I am understanding correctly. I would have a pond if I didn't have so many garden beds.

Well, Koi ponds have "garden beds" that would rival land gardens. The culling is heartless, but it is part of the "industry". I cull babies (at about two years) by finding them homes with folks that are not into the fancy coloration. Koi outlive people, by the way.

There are some issues with Koi that are not true for marine fish. A male and female are selected based on coloration and genetic makeup. When they are bred, the number from a mating is considerable but those are then culled. After a few years, when the coloration becomes more obvious, they are culled again. I have a fair number of them in the four figure area but those are inexpensive compared to the champion koi that have been shown and won championships. Five figures is common. My koi have bred indiscriminately (that is, it is not clear who was father and who was mother) but the number of good ones resulting is very small. I only have two resulting from a spawn that may be desirable, but I won't know of a couple of years yet.

I learn something everyday on here. Sounds like I should stay away froma koi pond at the new house... Don't need another expensive hobby... Already have enough vices

If I had the cash I'd snag a clarion in a heartbeat. Everyone has a point where they start getting squeamish at the price of a single fish. Mine is much lower than $3500...

My max is 2000$ maybe 2500$ on a fish... I would spend 2500$ on a clarion from Wen

I have been to gorgeous ponds. I love your culling method by the way. My land beds are show stoppers. I have met most of my neighbors because of them and our yard decorations. My 4 shih tzus were mistaken for statues once. :) The garden in Spokane WA has huge Koi in them. I have seen the same ones for years. So I can believe that they can outlive us humans. Thanks for culling your babies in such a way. :)

I think there is an element of owning something rare and exquisite, that is hard to come by. Like collecting art in a way.

Many people buy very expensive fish. My LFS gets lots of very pricy fish in and they never have them for more then a few days. In fact they got in a show size gold back trigger that was over a foot long and they sold it the same day they got it in. I think the price tag was $3,000. He gets in lots of rare fish and has no problem selling them. He has fish in his store that are over a 1,000 pretty much any time you go in there.

Maybe if I had more confidence in keeping them alive.

It would really scare me to have such an expensive fish.

Googled them and it sent me to a Bali Bra Website. The correct site looks pretty amazing.

So since they are in Bali, the LFS has to certify that it came from that location.

Bali won't sell to non stores so there is nothing to worry about there. Most fish he captive breeds there aren't being bred anywhere else so you can be assured it came from them
