Two Little Fishies Phosban Reactor Use

I am running carbon in one and PHOSar in the other in my wet/dry. I am about to change the media for the first time and I wanted to know if anyone has found an easy way to rinse the media and get it into the reactors without making a huge mess. It sticks to the container I rinse it in, and then it's not very easy to get it in the reactor.

Any advice/neat tricks?

I've read that other people put the media in a mesh bag (like the kind carbon comes in) to wash the media, then poor it in, from the bag to the reactor.

Put it in dry and run the first gallon or so of water into a waste bucket.

Thats what I do also.

Yeah i just change media when i do water change and run about 2.5 gals through each one of my reactors.

That is the easiest way...IMO.

As far as I know the temporary red tint that phosban makes isn't harmful, and I've heard that rinsing the media can make it less effective (probably only if you rinse with tap water). Either way if you have a filter sock the red tint will be gone overnight and as far as I know it shouldn't hurt the tank. I dont rinse it and I've never had a problem, but don't quote me on this because I'm not totally sure if there are any negatives to not rinsing phosban media

I run the return lines through my filter sock for the first minute until the water is clear---same for carbon which I run in the other phosban reactor

Is it safe to run both carbon and phosban in a single phosban reactor? I want to run one on my Nano and am thinking that it would be nice to run both at the same time.........

I put it in dry and just ran the first gallon of each into a waste bucket like many of you suggested. It seems to have worked just fine.

Thanks!!

Yes it would work but don't put much flow through it. Maybe 30gph.

its safe but more expensive---the carbon should be changed every two to three weeks--the phosban every two to three months. Phosban is far more expensive then carbon

If you do go with one reactor layer it one layer of carbon then phosban in the middle and then a top layer of carbon

okay i was going to buy 2 via aqua poly reactors and was wondering just how much of the phosban do i need to put in it? and for the other one i want to run carbon.

tagging along... I am getting ready to do this same thing... lmk how you like that reactor

OK.........but why carbon on the bottom and top instead of just the top where I can change it out several times without disturbing the phosban too much?

i know that carbon is bigger so it should settle at the top. like sand how the small stuff stays at the bottom and bigger at the top.

I read i another thread that you should not put them both in the same reactor... might want to do some more reading...

Do you have that thread?

The reasoning behind using different reactors is b/c each media requires different flow to be at peak efficiency.

Phosban needs minimal flow..Basically you want the media to "simmer" in the reactor, just enough to let it gently tumble.

Carbon needs a much higher flow.

I run 2 reactors in Sequence using a maxijet 400 to power them. Carbon reactor first, Phosban second.

Using this I can confirm a reading of Untraceable Phosphate when testing the water comming out of the reactors.

So would it be safe to run a Maxijet 1200 for carbon? alone?
i just have one laying around and would like to use it for somthing
