Just keep in mind that when you're just learning, the guy behind the camera is often a bigger limiting factor than the lens. :D

As an all-around lens, it's hard to beat the Sigma 17-70. It's about $340 on amazon, and offers a lot of performance for the money. As an added bonus, it can also focus closer than most lenses, about halfway betwen a standard lens and a true macro (1:2.3 magnification). That and a long telephoto would make a pretty good combo if you want to limit the number of lenses you own.

If you don't want to spend that much money, I'd start with a basic Canon 18-55 "kit lens" from the XT. You can probably pick one of those up for <$70 used. Nothing particularly stands out about this lens but the price. But, if you just want a zoom in this range to play around with while you're learning the camera, you can't go wrong here.

I have the 18-55 currently in this range, but I'm planning to replace it with a Canon 17-40L. It's another great lens, but $600+.

Better right

Yeah, I like the green one.
