hello everyone,
i got some insanely bright zoas, i mean glow in the dark and you can see em' from mars.
i have had some corals that get brighter than the sun then melt away.
has anyone found this to be true? i have seen it in brain corals the most. they are absolutley glowing neon colors but what is happening is they are dying.
has anyone seen this in zoanthids?
heres a pic just to entertain your eyes..

this is the brightest coral in my tank and its just a little frag.

+1. In the cases I witnessed the corals taking on "ultra" colors, they bleached right before dying. In a few instances the corals were saved by putting them in complete shade for a few weeks. It took many months to turn them around completely.
I don't know for sure if this practice still takes place, but transhippers and collectors used to inject or dye their corals to increase colors , and in turn make more profit. Most of the corals died eventually, or just became completly brown. I do not know if there is any correlation.
However, I have never personally seen this with zoanthids or palythoas.
I used to have some of the zoanthids pictured, no problems with melting or fading.

I have had that same morph before. They did not do too well for me. They did become brighter on the way out.

i have never seen it in zoas /palys but i have in lps. these are super bright and i only paid 20$ for them lol. i will keep an eye on them. i have never heard of injecting dye into the corals. that is insane.

Used to happen all the time. Like I said I don't know if they still practice it, but yeah pretty crazy. They still inject fish with dye, I don't see why they wouldn't still inject corals.

I would call them orange zoanthids....

I have had this happen with lots of zoa's, mostly expensive ones. I don't know if they are "injected" or dying, or what.
It seems like virtually all the "deepwater japanese" zoa's that were on the market 2-3 years ago melted.
There is some thought that zoas have some type of seasonal life span, no definitive data there.
I can say that due to my carelessness, or other factors, i have almost lost multiple colonies of some very nice, but not very expensive, zoas. I always just leave them be. As long as they have ome decent light, they come back.
