Ultra yellow scopas

I thought the same thing when I saw it. I'm no tang expert so maybe there is something I'm missing, but it looks just like a yellow tang to me.

It does not look identical to Zebrasoma flavescens. I see several differences (though most are subtle) between the two.

Honestly though the "yellow scopas" looks more like a flavescens x scopas hybrid to me, as I see subtle differences beyond color between it and a pure scopas as well. I have no idea whether hybridization actually occurs between those two species, I'm just commenting based on appearance.

If you look closely the body resembles the scopas more then the yellow also note the eye coloration and lips compared to the yellow

Well thats not gonna work i guess because that site is restricted, its a really good article about the two fish in question and how perhaps they are the same species. I google "difference between yellow tang and yellow scopas tang" and the heading for the article is "are the yellow and scopas tang more than kissing cousins?". I enjoyed the article i think you guys will to if you google search it

sunpet has some abberant and super abberant scopas available right now. the price tag on the super is $8k, and they dont even have pics of either lol

If you compare the OP picture in the link to the one of the yellow from LA they aren't the same fish at all. The differences may not be huge but they are there. And let's be honest people who have many one off tangs will buy this fish or someone who wants something different. As mentioned above most people here think the scopas is a overpriced yellow

After i saw this picture and had a chance to compare it to my yellow tang i see what your saying. The lips are certainly a bit different than mine and its eyes are much more brown in color

when i was diving in Kwaj, i saw a few yellow scopas. Not a yellow tang in sight, just a TON of scopas, and a few scopas variants. So hybrids are out of the questions (no yellows), and i believe Christmas island is the same (no yellows), so most likely just a variant... saw some black scopas, and half black/yellow scopas. those were pretty cool

Scopas are cheaper here too. Yellows are now $50+ in my area and Scopas around $35. To me the difference between the two isn't worth the price. I'm happy with my Yellow.
