Unique: A Reefing Journal: A Look Back & A Movement Forward

When's the 65 g I got from you come into play ?

Oh! I totally forgot about that thing, lol... Wasn't used for much other than a second display/live rock fuge, for a couple months during the running of the 75g talked about somewhere mid way through the first page. Though those are pretty nice smaller tanks IMO.

Thanks dude. I greatly appreciate your appreciation :beer:

I think you will really like what I've been working on "out of water"... Now that I have my 40 presentable as far as scape, it's really got me excited about what will be my next.

Gotta find a nice, clean, and used 93g marineland soon ;)

I actually hate this breeder, and it's dimensions and size, but it was a good place to start over.

I thank you sooooo much for your providing the info on your dino solution.

I have been plagued for some time and have been siphoning to no avail. Lights out was next followed by peroxide. My beautiful 120 SPS tank is becoming a poorly colored, poorly behaved mess. I blame the dinos and the chemical stew they create are to blame as all other parameters are stable and have been.

Thanks again!

Thank you. And nothing in the hobby is guaranteed. However like I said in my doing post and previously, I had some serious issues,for some time, and that approach and all out attack seemed to work for me... So far, lol. But at least I am not running scared from the and worrying anymore, as I know it can be done.

Again, I appreciate the kind words :beer:

Picked up 7 new polyp morphs today. Gonna give them a day or two before I try for a pic or two. Not too sure how they will do, but I'm optimistic. They are coming from led to t5. I am changing my spectrum to a more blue spectrum this week. Until I get the new bulbs in, I am gonna cut back on more of the white light. I also inquired about kept alk levels, but the source does not keep track of that specifically. I keep mine between 8 to 9 dkh generally.

I have not positively confirmed all the ID's yet, though I am working on it.

* Mandarin Oranges
* Fruit Loops (will be my second group, first ones have never done well, but were not fragged well at all originally)
* Chucky's Bride
* King Midas

The ones I still need to positively ID,

* CB Punk Rocker
* Blue Agave
* Pink Ladies

All are nice frags. The fruit loops concern me the most at this point, and then maybe the blue agaves, and chucky's bride. (Again, some still need to be ID confirmed) the fruit loops were fragged just before I got there. I know this because I remounted them to a different plug when I got home, and the glue was still soft inside. So I worry about them the most, due to being fresh cut, and in my experience, they don't like being fragged. They were open pretty good upon purchase however, and have already started opening even after having the glue removed and remounting.

It is always difficult to tell for sure how a polyp or coral will do in a new system, even if it does appear comfortable in the first day or two, as by simply opening right away can be misleading. However, like I said, I'm optimistic at this point and my source was a very nice person and had some nice varieties and I greatly appreciate the time they took and the conversation had.

Really looking forward to getting back into polyps like I had in the past, and hoping to return to some of the success I had with them in my past tile based setups.

some of the pics from yesterdays pickups.

Mandarin Orange. These 4 polyps are small as I was told they are taken from the edge of the coloney and were very small and just formed polyps. Either way, they are fully healed and doing well. I find Mandarin Oranges to be similar to Bam Bams, however they have a more yellow hue to them. I very much like them.

king midas. I think these look great when a colony is formed under good lighting. Sorry my pics are so blue. Much better to the eye in person.

the fruit loop morphs that were freshly cut and have me a little concerned at the moment. They were open more before remounting them as the glue was pretty heavy previously. The polyp on the bottom right isn't really holding onto anything but the other two polyps, So im sure if the frag makes it, it will need a little longer to attach it's self more securely and will then open up and look much better.

and a not so great pic of Chucky's Bride. Has some coloring up to do, but is looking good so far. This was also a recently fragged piece.

and the other 3 that I am still positively ID'ing. Not saying they aren't what they were said to be, but the more info and opinions I gather, the more certain I can be. And that certainly cant hurt.

and this one clearly has some opening to do and to get more comfortable, but this one was REALLY nice in the tank in which in came. A type of people eater for sure, and a nice speckled red body and skirt.

Great additions, that last paly sound like it might be a blue agave people eater. I'm glad to see some sps made their way in there. I've always like how there were able to grow in your system un obstructed by other corals. On those pedestals they look like museum pieces.

The last one was sold as a blue agave, I just wana see it open and get a couple opinions before I commit to that name. Either way it's gorgeous! Hopeful it does well.

I've actually added 5 sps in the last couple weeks, and only two are left. A red planet, which I just moved today, and a orange digi. While the others faded slowly (green Slimer), or RTN'd (Cali tort & an unknown blue), the two remaining are basing out further and seem to be just fine. Once and if hey continue to do well, I am gonna snip the tip off of the red planet to help encourage it to grow out rather than just basing.

I'm trying for a mix of sps, zoas/palys & favias. This is my first attempt at keeping any favias, but I'm hopeful. I won't be keeping any softies or other LPS or 'nems, at least not in this display. My main focus will be zoas/palys and my lighting intensity and water chemistry will be made to fit their priority first and foremost. At least that is the plan right now, we will have to see how they do for a while. If I can keep sps and favias too, then sweet. I'm thinking all 3 together will be fine if I keep my dkh around 9, and I don't blow them up with too much light.

I'm not sure why I lost those few sps, but hey, it happens, lol. I'm gonna hold off for a bit before adding more sps for a bit, and same with he favias just to observe them for a while. But it's on for adding polyps, lol, as they are all doing well now for the most part.

Thank you for the kind words, your interest is very much appreciated. I really like your current setup as well :beer:

Little update on my effort to properly ID the last few zoas I got. From everything I can see and find for pics and threads, the ones listed as cornbred punk rockers and not said polyps. The CB PR's do not have a orange/red center. His original PR's have a green center. These are still very nice polyps however, but they are not what they were sold to me as. Still very happy with my polyp as it's still very beautiful.

If I happen to find out more info, I will update and/or correct myself...

I would like to add to my last post. After a few more responses, Pm's and google searches and more research, I have come to the educated conclusion that the supposed "punk rockers", which are not in fact that, are actually "Gatorade" zoas. Originally named and released by Sexy Corals.

It's very important to not be quick to claim your zoas as a specific name or source, and to follow up any purchase with your own research. IMO, some folks/sources/importers put a lot of time and effort into getting new morphs and coloring them up and releasing them to collectors. IMO it's unfair to change names or mislabel corals. I'm positive my source was genuinely under the impression they were correct and I am in no way bashing them. I still got some great frags with great color, and I'm not going to correct anyone publicly. I'm simply relaying my own efforts and research conclusions in my own thread.

Again, I'm still very happy with my purchase, and the polyp is still a beauty regardless! :)

My favorite part is the planning and build up.

Ain't that the truth. Once a tank gets to the point where it is good and just needs to grow out, things get a bit boring. Fortunately that next crisis is always just around the corner.
