Unknown white "slime"

I have questioned several area LFS and no one knows what this is. I can describe it as a white to clear stringy slime. It starts out on the glass like a slight coating, then progresses throughout the tank. It builds upon itself creating three and four inch strings clinging to the live rock and corals. It used to show up once or twice a month and be gone in a few days. It has lasted 10 days now.

90 gal, overflow. Vortec high flow type wave maker, Mag drive 6000 from sump to two returns. 8w UV sterilizer, Large Skimmer in sump, Algae sock (which clogs within 8 hours with this stuff breaking away)

8.3 PH, Nitrates 5ppm, Nitrites 0, Phos 0, Cal 410, KH 11

You can upload a jpg to your RC Gallery (click on the camera icon above your post) and then post the picture in a thread with the use of the [ img][ /img] tags. Removing the extra spaces of course.

It is most likely a bacterial product, which are often driven by certain organic-containing additives.

Can you list everything you add and/or feed to the tank?

I think I have the same thing you have... My filter sock gets clogged real fast with this stuff. and I kinda have an idea that it is Bacteria grown from the vinegar i have been adding to my kalk. I had a HUGE bloom of it overnight when my filter sock clogged and overflowed my tank dumping 5gal of limewater (with vinegar) into my take. Its the only thing I can think of. any ideas?

Had the same problem here with using Vinegar saturated LimeWater.........

I quit using the Vinegar mixed into my LimeWater and have went to regular LimeWater because of this pronounced bacterial bloom effect........so far, so good !!

well It looks like it was vinegar. I stopped using it now the slim is all gone! Amazing how fast it goes away without its food source
