upgrade time?

Well some of you all know that I had planned on my move last weekend. All was working out well, got into the new apartment, got a downstairs this time! Moved all my belongings over and left the two tanks for last...

Yeah thought it was a good idea, after two days of moving by myself in a Jeep Wrangler, yeah I was kinda getting exhausted. So time for the tanks, got a neighbor with a truck to help out, felt he kinda owed it to me after sitting for many hours over the last year watching my tank grow. Well get got it all moved and while I was installing all the plumbing on the back I kinda binded a pipe for the overflow and yeah it happened. Cracked the top of the tank. From the overflow to the top straight up and down, bout a 3 inch crack. Kinda in a dilema, I decided on a last resort to smear silicone on the back of the tank from the overflow up to the top and filled the tank. It is holding water fine for the last two days, but its only a matter of time.

My question is: If I upgrade from my 40 breeder to a 75 gallon, will fit my stand, have plenty of enough live rock and may need to buy one bag of sand. Would it cause another cycle if I use all the water, rock, sand from this tank and only add freshly mixed water?

This misfortune could give me a reason for the upgrade!! Making lemonaide out of the lemons that were tossed my way. :ape::ape:

Don't you mean out of lemons that you manhandled and broke? :P

I've done very similar in the past. Upgraded by simply adding more water volume to an already cycled supply of sand/rock/water. Their were times when I'd see a small ammonia spike (this was usually in cases where I replaced the entire sandbed and/or some of the rock) and then I've seen as little as a small nitrate spike. currently with my 75g that we threw up in a hurry, I used some already cured rock from my 58g, the already cured rock from ryans 56g, new sand, and new water to make up the difference. I've yet to see any spike of any kind. In fact preliminary testing done yesterday showed everything to be "good" at this point. A smidge of phosphate but everything else was spot on. I would definatly expect some diatoms, green algae, some sort of 'new tank syndrome' at the least as the tank itself hasn't colonized any bacteria/slime/or anything else.

don't ya just hate having to upgrade your tank :P I'll be looking forward to a 75g build thread

Damn man that stinks! But upgrades are fun! Not sure if others would recommend it but when I upgraded from my 5.5 pico to my 24 aquapod I just started dumping my water change water in the pod and kept everything cycling with live rock after sever water changes the move was flawless no spikes. I also seeded the live sand as well with sand from my pico, I kept the light cycle really short as not to cause a major bloom.

shawne,

If you have problems/leaks before you get the 75 ready,
yell and I'll store some corals for you.
