Upgrading powerheads

I'm adding an auto top off and plan to use my MJ1200 to accomplish this. So I'll be removing the MJ, as well as a penguin 1160 and some other cheap 200gph pump. I was thinking of the Seios, and don't have the funds, or the permission , to get Tunze. Total rated output of the 3 pumps in the main is 795 gph. I was thinking 2 620's would increase what I have by over 400gph. Any thoughts?

We had an interesting discussion on SEIOs over in Paul Whitby's 600g tank thread, recently.

Anyhow, my thoughts are... Like you, I chose SEIO as I didn't really need the power or have the funds for Tunze. Maybe the first part is an excuse to make me feel better about the second.

Anyhow, I got 2 SEIO 620s for my 55g reef tank. For a 75, 2 SEIO m620s will work great. If you can squeen by the funds, add a 3rd. While 2 820s are about $10 cheaper then 3 620s, you get more GPH per $$$ and more GPH per Watt from the 620s. SIGNIFICANTLY more. Or at least a good bit more.

Another thought, for the auto-topoff system, you are going WAY overkill to use a Maxijet 1200 for that. Now, I may not understand your plan. But if it is the pretty standard plan including a float switch or 2 that turn an outlet on and off, then an Aqua Lifter is a much better choice.

Just my opinion, of course. Whatever works for you is great.

Thanks for the input Paul, The pump will be about 5' below the output of the hose, so the MJ is only putting out 10-20 gph at that height, best I can figure. How well do the Seios spread out the water?

They do an excellent job at presenting diffuse (spread out) flow.

And for the price ($12) I still have to suggest the Aqua Lifter. Heck, I have 3 I got cheap at Walls during a fish store sellout sale. I'd sell you one cheap, if I could get it up there.
