Using a manual valve as a flow restrictor RO/DI

Hi all,

I'm just rebuilding my RO/DI system and am wondering if I can use a manual valve to control flow through the waste line of my system. I will measure my waste to clean and adjust to get a 4:1 ratio.

What is the problem with doing this?

Thanks,

Stu

I've been running my RO/DI with a John Guest ball valve for the restrictor for two years now, no problems. It's a bit of a pain to get the 4:1 waste ratio dialed with the ball valve, but once done it works fine. If you have a fair amount of seasonal variation in the temperature of your source water, it may be worth checking your rejection ratio from time to time to make sure it hasn't "drifted".

If I had it to do over again I'd get a JG needle valve for more precise control in setting, I think a couple of RC sponsors carry them, Buckeye Field Supply is one.

Thanks Yogre. I figured it would be okay so it's good to know someone else has had no negative results.

I lost the capillary line restrictor for my filter at one point and ran a valve in it's place for years. Once you dial in the ratio it works just fine.

I recommend you look into a permeate pump, which is what I've switched over to. Advantages of increased efficiency and higher tank pressure.
