Using dried Monti cap in the calcium reactor

I recently re-landscaped a portion of my tank where my monti-cap had grown exponentially. The pieces from underneath healthy live caps were essentially dead. I put a lot of the healthy pieces in my frag tank but still had extra left over, (besides the dead pieces). Someone told me to crush the cap and use it as media in the calcium reactor....I'm not sure if this is a good substitute/practice or I should just dispose of it. Any opinions/experience would be appreciated.....

Frank, It's calcium - I use dead stuff so does Joe in the big reef.
Just make em small!
