Using drinking water GFO in a reef

Has anybody tried GFO from sources used to purify drinking water?
It costs about 1/4 as much, but you have to buy a 50# pail of it.

I would guess if it's safe for human consumption (well, the water it treats, anyhow) it's probably safe for reefs. But I don't know that.

The MSDS doesn't list any contaminants; only FEO-OH.
They also supply a performance sheet (attached, images stripped for size).

It is listed right on your linked page that aquariums are a typical use. I'd feel ok giving it a try.

Now, actually being able to buy the stuff, that may be tricky. Doesn't look like a place that sells to small retail users. I'd be interested to hear if anybody has managed to purchase this way.

I suspect it's fine. It might not be as efficient per ounce as aquarium products, but it's still likely cheaper to use. Aquarium products sometimes seem to be treated to increase porosity.

boy that sure looks like the high capacity gfo that BRS sells...I wonder if that's where BRS is buying theirs from

It could be. There are only a few manufacturers of GFO around, unless the situation has changed. Some aquarium companies do claim to work on the product to improve performance, though.
