using prazi for a "just in case"

stopped at the lfs today while i was in the city, picked up a small bottle of prazi. i have a kole tang in qt that has been through ttm. he has another couple of weeks before he goes into my dt.

i seem to see a lot of posts by people who use prazi with fish that have no visible signs of parasites, etc.

is this something that is pretty frequently done?

I always use Prazipro on all new fish. It's minimally invasive and eradicates an "unseen enemy" i.e. gill flukes. You dose, wait 5-7 days, do a 25% WC, and then dose again. The first round gets the worms, the second gets the "next generation" from any eggs left behind before they can lay eggs of their own. (Prazi only kills worms - not their eggs.)

For next time you do TT - just dose Prazi on the onset of transfers 2 & 4 (or 3 & 5). Kill two birds with one stone. ;)

Also remember to increase gas exchange while using Prazi (a good idea when using any medication IMO).

thanks for the info, HF. i'll have to get my magnifying glass out to read the dosage, it's a tiny bottle. ;)

what is the best way to increase gas exchange?

Just a word of warning - I've been taking my current QT inhabitants through a round of prazi. The longnose hawkfish pair I have has been seriously depressed throughout...not eating and just huddling in a corner. I probably will forego the second treatment on them. Other fish (2 azure damsels, marine betta, skunk clown, watchman goby) in the tank went a day or two without eating and then went back to normal.

ok, that's kinda what i figured. i tied a knot in the airstone tubing so it wouldn't be too much so i'll let that out some. and thanks for the dosage info. :)

HF, have you ever experienced the negative reactions that HPark is talking about?

I've noticed some appetite suppression and occasionally certain fish will act lethargic. Praziquantel only remains active in the water for 72 hrs max, so IMO it's something most fish should be able to deal with. I can't ever remember losing a fish while treating with Prazi (including wrasses). I mention wrasses because numerous posters here have reported problems treating wrasses with Prazi. But I suspect in many cases, it was because they overdosed the medication. Some fish can handle being OD'd on Prazi... apparently wrasses are not one of those fish. ;)

Lethargy can set in almost immediately after using Prazi but fish usually become used to it after 2-3 days in my 20 gal QT. I suggest 2 treatments 2-3 days apart from each other.

ok, that makes me feel better. this guy has been in qt for weeks, is recovering from lympho, endured tt and only has another couple of weeks before he goes into my dt. he's already been through hell and back! LOL

I have no idea if it's coincidence, but I lost both longnoses in qt and I was using prazi :(

I have had other fish react negatively to prazi. It's unclear to me what actually causes the issue. All that said, I still use it on all new fish in QT.

Is it possible that the liquid that the prazi is actually dissolved in causes issues? I thought I read it was alcohol based, since prazi isn't water soluble. Could the alcohol cause a bacterial infection already present, but as yet unseen, on the fish grow/expand? Sort of like vodka dosing a reef tank to increase bacterial growth. Just thinking oput loud here...

I've posted a bunch of times on here that I have experienced a lot of problems with prazi pro. Many wrasses I had that seemed perfectly fine prior to prazi just lay on the bottom and expire after prazi. Mostly flashers, but leopards as well. Halichoerus seem un affected. Leopards may or may not be coincidence as they often are reported to die for no reason. But I definitely have had much more success with the few leopards I have tried after deciding not to use Prazi pro on them. Also as far as overdosing, I was using it in a 20g QT, so its not that hard to count up to 1 tspn. lol

Also on tangs and angels I've also noticed much less to no appetite during treatment, but I don't recall losing any due to it. Wrasses seem to take it harder.

ok now you guys have me scared to death and rethinking this treatment!!! what to do, what to do!!

I wouldn't worry about treating a tang, Nina. Go ahead, and observe. The beauty of a small QT... if anything looks off with the fish, just do a big water change, add carbon, and all is well again. :)

thanks, peter. so you are saying to treat and not worry or just not treat and observe?

ya know, he's been in qt 5 weeks now. you may recall, i tried cupramine (for suspected ich which i know think was just lympho) but i could not get the dosage where it needed to be so instead, i switched to ttm. the lympho spots are completely gone. i would think, if he had flukes, he would be showing some sort of symptom by now. just another couple of weeks and he'll be ready to go into my dt.

i think i will just leave well enough alone. :)
