Using sand directly from ocean

I'm going to be in the Orlando area last part of this month and taking a 3 day cruise to Nassau.....

Question: I'm setting up a new tank and want to know if anyone has experience in getting sand directly from beach area for use.

1. How far should I go into the ocean to collect the sand.

2. How long after collecting will the sand last if I drain the water, bag it and ship it home?

Different topic... any LFS I should visit in the Orlando area while I'm there?

Just buy bagged live sand, it would probably be cheaper after shipping and you might send yourself some sand filled with organics and silica, or it will arrive to you as "dead" sand. imho not worth the trouble.

plus it probably isn't exactly legal to bring in a bunch of sand. It would include animals and have to be declared I imagine

I would just buy it...I got a 30lbs from Dr.Fosters for like $25,

World Wide Corals in Orlando, probably the only store you have to go to, and the one you'll spend all your money in
