UV Flow?

Tang Police Fugitive
Hi. I recently bought a Gamma 8w UV for my 72 FOWLR. I know that for them to be affective the flow needs to be slow. The directions dont tell me how slow they need to be. Algea and bacteria is 1 flow, parasites is another flow. What would the ideal flow be for my tank with this UV.

Hi,

I would probably keep around 400-600 range for your size tank. The slower you go the more kill rate you get, which is good for parasites, but if you just want to clarify the water, so it's nice and clear you can go to the max flow rate.

thanks

I have a maxi-jet 400 with a 160 gph flow rate. Would this be ideal to kill parasites, algea and bacteria. Thanks for the help.

That would give you a good kill rate, but might not be enough flow to turn over your tank effectively. I think i would try and get something larger, probalby mj1200 minimum or a Mag350 etc.

thanks

Hi,

Yes, you would still get a good kill rate. If you had a big outbreak, you might slow down temporarly, but should be a good amount at that flow, or if you want higher flows, might look at a larger wattage unit.

Keep in mind that the if your run your sterilizer all the time, the parasites and other nondesirables will pass through the sterilizer several times per day. If the first dose of radiation doesn't kill them, they'll get bombarded again.
