vacuum your sand?

Does anyone vacuum there sand, and if so how do you do it without sucking you sand out? the reason I ask is I just move all my fish and live rock from my 20G to my new 46g the 20g filter is still running with water and sand in the tank. for fun I mixed up the sand just to see how dirty it was, and I could not believe it. :lol:

Disturbing the sand bed can cause a cycle all over again. I vacuum my sand only on the very surface where there is small pouches of cyano and fish poop. You just have to be carefull not to get to much sand, some will come out.

if you vacuum your sand on a regular basis, once every couple months, you will be fine. if you havent vacuumed in 2 yrs, you definitely would not want to start. i use the kind that hooks up to my sink, it doesnt pull too much sand through to the sink.
