Vanessa's 60g Peninsula Tank Build

it came with some filter stuff that hang on the back, which wouldnt work with my peninsula design... it would also drip on my desk if there happened to be drips which would be no bueno. yes the plan is to do a sump i just havent figured out anything specific yet :spin1: whenever i start a new project i always take the complicated route and i am always glad i did because it makes it easier down the line. let the PVC and plumbing plans commence.

I can't wait to see your sump system design. Diagram or sketch would help. Some people draw themselves and some use software to do it. It really does help your plan. If you're looking for 3D free software, I would suggest Google sketchup.

Yup, same here. The more challenging the better for me.

Thanks everyone !

thanks ! ill look into that. my friend just gave me a 20 gallon tank to use but i just tried to put it in the stand and it doesnt clear the edge by like 3 inches :headwally: so plan B will be enacted. not that i really had a solid plan A- or a plan B. so i guess really im just back to sqaure 1. which isnt far.

and now it is raining (or going to rain) so i cant finish painting the hood :furious: and i cant walk anywhere in my room since now all my construction equipment is taking up all the walking space since the deck is off my bedroom. stepped on my hammer when i got out of bed.:twitch: GOOD MORNING VANESSA:thumbdown

" it doesnt clear the edge by like 3 inches"?
You can replace the (2x4) back support with 2 (2x3) but move them to the sides.

Thanks everyone !

Calm down:D!!!!! Make sure you have plan A, B, and C ready because more obstacles to come . That's very unfortunate the 20G won't fit, must be frustrating. Speaking about frustrating, I am assuming that you will have the skimmer in your sump. My suggestion, before you even do your plumbing, make sure that your skimmer you would get, it will fit under your stand. I bought 180g, and the none of the skimmer would fit. So I had to get another 180g. :deadhorse1:

May be....put the hammer away where it belongs?:frog:

You should be able to take the support beam out, and then redrill it. I did it with the 180

i just did more measuring.... i thought it was just the long side that wont clear but the short side of the tank is actually just as wide as the outside of the short side of the stand..... so theres no way i can even take a beam out and fit it in, it is actually impossible :headwalls:
so either i am passing this tank back on to kayla or...... this will be my eventual bedroom tank :D all works out i guess.

i just sat down to search the forums for some peninsula plans...... so if you already know of any solid build with plans similar to mine if you could link me that would be wonderful although i am sure i will stumble upon them sometime.

and the hammer is now in its cabinet.

heres my dimensions....... the sump either has to be smaller than 10 inches to sit on the floor, or smaller than 11.875 inches to sit on the ledge that runs on the bottom to sit off the floor.... and around 17inches in length so be able to fit around the center divider.

so far what i know is that i also need a return pump, skimmer, i want a refugium (sp?), a light for the refugium.... and an overflow, heater.

so from my understanding the refugium- i can divide a section out of the sump with a shorter wall so that water spills into the refugium and then after goes to the return pump where it is pushed back to the tank ?

if i dont have enough to buy a skimmer at this point or cant pick one up for a cheap bargain can i run without one for a while until i find a good steal somewhere ?

and then theres pvc......... and thats about it besides getting my tank drilled ?

oh powerheads ! :crazy1:

ive seen tanks with (i dont know proper terminology here) "arms" coming over the tank with powerheads coming down from the top, but then kayla was talking about something last week trying to remember... something about drilling three holes and having it fork or something from the side ? i totally could have paraphrased that completely wrong.

Where abouts in SD are you located? Unfortunately with such a narrow area underneath the tank, it's going to be hard to find a tank that will fit. The cheapest way to "sump" is usually to make you own. That way it's built to suit you needs. You can also have the sump sit next to the tank on either side of the stand. But this requires more room and might look a little "ugly" showing the guts of your system. You can also go custom and have an acrylic sump built, but that gets pricey.

My reply is in bold blue below:

Ok, so you either hunt that thank dimension or, you might need to get it custom made.

Yes, you are correct. Most people have the sump sectioned by Drain, Refugium, and Return.

Yes, you can. As a matter of fact, while you're tank is cycling, you don't need to have skimmer.

You might need to go over the list that you might need.:lmao:

Get Kayla over here, what is she talking about??? :lmao:

It is not impossible, but you have to work a bit more :-). I see that you have 10+3.5+1 inches real estate there. You need 12.5 inches for the depth of the sump. Take out that middle support piece in the back and put in 2 new supporting pieces to left and right of the back side, lets say you do 2 of the 2x2 bars.
I need to see a picture of the stand from behind to confirm this. My tank stand looks just like yours remember?

i spent like three hours on facetime with xavier last night- i have a plan now !!! yippee !!!!

here ! this might be better than my drawing. the pink arrows are the dimensions of the floor area in between the support ledge on the bottom and the blue arrows are the areas above the support ledge, where i could put a false bottom if i needed to.. then the orange are fairly self explanatory. the 2.25 inches is the heigh of the ledge.

Yes, if you move the middle support 2x4 to the sides "and" have a sheet of wood on top of the base then I think you will have room for a 12 inch depth, front to back, sump. I can send you a picture of my stand if this is not clear. Like I said before, you need to move the middle support bar but have the same support somewhere else

You might think of where to drill the bottom next. It looks like the top part of the stand is not going to fit nicely!
heading to pet kingdom later this week..... i heard they drill tanks.......

Ok, Cool Cool.
You've been taken care of. I'll sit back and relax to see the progress :lmao:

not so fast !
i drew up some plans.... i have to move photos off my phone first before i can post them
that three hour talk was more like me finally understanding how a sump actually works. yay me !:bounce3:

Oh Mannnn...so we're stuck with you????:spin2:
3 hours just for the sump ONLY? oh com on, I thought that would be for the whole system. :lolspin:

Btw, watching Reef videos will help you to have a better understanding as well. I dont know if you have watched those videos on youtube. If you have not, I would recommend BRS TV and Vivid Aquarium TV on youtube on how to build Reef for beginner. They're pretty helpful.

yes you are in fact, stuck with me..........
i bought my first coral frag, so its official. no getting out now. Kayla doesnt know what Golgi's gonna do when i take my coral to my tank because it is his favorite perch :hmm2: (since we are a neuro lab we have named all the fish using neuro related terms- we also had Santiago, Ramon, and Cajal, Santiago Ramon y Cajal was the founder of neuroscience :lol2: ) however, poor Santiago the firefish and Cajal the banggai cardinal are no longer with us :sad2:

and i will check that out, thanks !!

Yikessss....we're stuck:worried:

Wait a minute, you're setting up a reef system at the moment, and you already bought corals? hmmmmm....Im confused. :eek1:

Pictures updates??????
