Vertex Pro Bio Pellets

I've had mine close to it so far, but think about doing it directly. I've asked this same question on another thread. I can't see that it would hurt anything.

Does OZONE affect the pellet effectiveness? (I know they said UV might slow down the biopellet maturity time)

Tagging along. I got some of these on order to use in my TLF reactor when my phosban is ready to be replaced. It will be interesting to see what it does in my system. What I mean by that is, my wife and I just had a baby girl about 3 months ago and the tank has been extremely neglected. I haven't done a water change in over 3 months so my tank has GHA all over the rocks and even growing on my overflow and my water has a nasty yellow tint to it that I'm associating with the GHA and all the organics in my system. I really hope that this stuff will help get me through til I can get back on a maintenance schedule again.

Oh and for the people talking about the egg smell. I found this on Premium's website:

" Lack of proper water movement or overdosing can result in production of Hydrogen Sulfide which has a foul rotten egg smell."

I began this journey about 2 weeeks ago and I'm starting to see some changes. I was running GFO and it came time to refill and decided to try this.

* Haven't had to scrape the glass in 4 days. Prior: every day.
* My candy cane looked kinda sick for 3 or so days, but now appears to be recovering. All other corals (SPS, LPS and zoas) look good.
* Skimmer has begun to really produce and it stinks badddddd (imagine outhouse on a fla august afternooon).

Prior to starting, po4 and no3 where both measuring undetectable on the kits (elos and api). I haven't seen any change in PH. I have a 75 dt + 30 sump. I'm doing 5g wcs weekly. I have about 200-250ml in my reactor.

I do have a few little tufts of HA and they don't show any change as of yet.

I'm watching the HA to see if it starts to receed.

I m using 500ml of vertex bp in a Vertex Media Reactor UF20, the pump i m using is rated 600 gal per hr and I had it dial down a bit. 3 Days of cloudiness because of the bacteria bloom. After the water cleared, I found all my milli are doing poorly and I lost 3 corals. So far, I have not seen too much change on the cyano situation. Nitrate stays the same.

At least I am telling myself the water look clear as ever.

Sorry for your loses. I haven't lost anything yet and I hope I don't. Today marks the use of the pellets at four weeks. Not too much to report other than the PH has dropped. The algae had started dying off but now I'm not so sure that trend is continuing. My PO4 and NO3 has always been undetectable so I can't tell anything has changed there. I'll just keep on chugging along and see how it goes.

What's your KH?

Neither ozone nor UV will affect the bacteria directly. Ozone will break down some organics, which could be a positive or a negative, depending on what's in the water, but I wouldn't expect a huge difference, in general, although that's possible.

... I plumbed my reactor output to the UV Sterilizer. Small attempt to keep bacteria from entering the sump.

cheers,
Marian

My PH was down to 7.72 this morning. It's the lowest I've seen so far. I hope things improve soon. It did get up to 8.12 yesterday.

UV sterilizers do little in regards to destruction of bacteria. UV is used to cause DNA breaks resulting in the inability for the bacteria to divide/reproduce by fission. The bacteria will still enter your sump.

I ended up using extra mesh from my mesh modded skimmer. 2 layers fastened with zip ties. So far its working.

Do you think it was a good idea to only start with 100ml of pellets for a 37g tank(probably 45+ total gallons?)
