Vertex Pro Bio Pellets

Day 3 of Bacterial Bloom

Day 3 of Bacterial Bloom

Well on this the 3rd day of the bloom I can report progress.... The bloom is going away and the skimmer is starting to settle down a little. I did make some adjustments to flow in the Pellet reactor but I believe the bloom was already reseeding before the adjustment.

Now that I can see inside the tank I can report that some of the corals have lost a little color (slight brown tint to a couple acropora) but nothing is dead or dying. Polyp extension is not what I would expect at this time of day either. All the fish are healthy with no signs of stress. The anemone is out and happy also.

I agree with this 100% ---------My only advice is to slow down on either the amount of biopellets being added ----------

Start slow and go slow with the amount NOT the flow since low flows will produce unwated effects.

I recently started running them and my initial dose is 1/4 of suggested I will be adding more as I c needed.

Tank tonight

Mg 1300 dosing 224 ml a day, held
Alk 9dkh dosing 280 ml a day, moved down to 256
Ca 345 dosing 120 ml a day, moved up to 160
P04 0.00 per colormeter
N03 0

I guess my low P04 is good considering I have taken my GFO completely offline since the Pellets have been in. Normally if I don't run GFO I have allot of algae buildup on the glass and GHA will start. I did have some GHA in the tank but it is defiantly dieing off.

I am on day 3 of my attempt to use the Vertex product in my 900 gallon setup. I am using 6 liters of the media, barely tumbling in a PM reactor. The pellets are barely tumbling at the surface. Water is much clearer than the start with no signs of a bacterial bloom.

Are you doing balling method?.. looks like you dosing a lot of MG..
I am on the proccess to start balling my self

yes I am doing the balling method, Im not sure why my MG is so high but I think it may be leveling out.
I will retest MG and CA tomorrow to see what my adjustments did.

just piked up vertex pro today for my 220 gal system. i added half the 1000ml bag into both chambers of my brs reactor and both are half full of media when i turn the pump on. not sure if all of it will into both chambers. anyone modify there brs reactor with the screen mesh?

I've been using this about two weeks now. though I started with about 1/3-1/2 the reccomended amount. have not experienced a bacterial bloom. just curious as to where people are keeping the alk on the tank. seeing as it is similar to vodka dosing do you have to keep alk less than 8 to prevent alk burn?

Okay its day 5 of my little experiment with 6 liters of the pellets. For the last 3 days the skimmer has been going nuts and skimming out wet nasty foam and I have to change my filter socks every other day.

The entire 90 gallon fuge is covered in a white bacterial mulm. No inhabitants in the system yet, just a few snails and hermits. Nitrates went from over 100ppm to 25ppm on a Salifert test kit. I can't attribute the drop to the pellets as the tank was cycling. However the total cycle time on 1200 pounds of live rock was under 2 weeks. I think the pellets played a big roll in getting the tank cycled faster.

Thats great new!

I noticed tonight that my pellets were clumping a little. I pumpped my zeo reactor and got them to break up and then change the flow up slightly.

How long did it take your skimmer to stop going crazy? I may have to get another skimmer just to handle the effluent from the reactor if it doesn't slow down soon. Ill post up some videos of the flow in my reactor and the bacterial film.

The skimmer started normalizing about 4 days into the bloom which overall would have been about the 6 or Th day.
