Vertex Skimmer club

where does everyone get that plug I see on the bottom of their skimmer cup? I see this in many pictures here and would like to let the cup fill rather than use a piece of tubing. Would be even nicer if Vertex provided a plug.

Mine came with the skimmer.

Need Help...I have my vertex in-180 up and running for about a week now, suddenly when I start it up it over flows the entire skimmer cup. After playing with it for a while, I noticed wen I unhook the air hose from the top vent piece it runs fine. Can anyone help me with what is going on here? ....on another note after powering it down and turning it back on once, it stopped creating bubbles....i looked an the hose seemed to be clogged so I blew into it and it started again. Is this normal?

I took the pump on my IN-180 apart tonight. It was clean of any debris, but did appear to have some minor "dings" on the magnet part of the needlewheel. When I put it back in and started it up, it fired right up but started foaming like crazy filling the whole body with bubbles and overflowing into the cup. So, I turned it off and started it up again and it was back to clanking around. So, I stuck my hand over the input to get it started up again and again it foamed all over the place. So, I turned it off and tried it one more time, it started up after a couple of chatters and started foaming. So, I opened the stand pipe and covered the air input and when all the air had been drained from the line I let it go. Then it started to run normal with no excess foaming. So, I tried turning it off and on a couple of times and it seems to be working just fine now. I'll let it run until tomorrow and try it again. Is it possible that the problem was air trapped in the pump? Any other ideas?

Bill...this is exactly what is happening to me right now, after I took the pump apart to clean....did you get an answer on this?

Sounds like you had some salt buildup blocking the air hose. Keeping the air hose clean is part of routine maintenance. A lot of people run warm RO-DI water through the hose every few weeks or month.

I agree, that's what happened with my previous older skimmer. This is happening now after running the new skimmer for about a week. I did nothing to clean any salt and it's running fine now. It appeared to me that some air was "stuck" in the pump someplace and I forced it to be pulled through by covering the airline. That's the only explanantion I could come up with.

Well, after about an hour the skimmer overflowed again, (this time onto the floor because the water ran off a piece of plumbing and over the side of the sump...#$@!). Anyways, I took everything apart again, ran some warm water through it, and all seems to be good now. I think what actually happened is that when I took the pump out, I got water in the air line which cause a clog, but even after I blew it out, there was still some salt buildup. So hopefully, the warm freshwater did the trick. Now I just have to reroute that piece of plumbing that cause the spill, so if it overflows in the future, it stays in the sump.
 
OK IN 180 owners I have a question. Mine has been in the sump for 48 hours and I noticed yesterday that after I fed the tank the bubble level dropped in the skimmer so I adjusted back up to wear I wanted it and 30 min later it overflowed. Readjusted and all was good till I fed the tank today and the bubbles dropped again. Is this normal and me just being paranoid?

is it normal for the bubble to collapse when you feed...
just let it come back....some takes longer than others..

Your not suppose to do it that way. After the initial adjustment. You have to leave it alone. Its normal for most skimmers to react when you put your hand in the water, feeding etc. When it does, just be patience, it will go back to where it was..:thumbsup:

You should check the silencer cap on the skimmer discharge pipe as well. Maybe you have some debris in the small hole on the cap, and that is causeing the problem with keeping your water level consistent.
 
My new Vertex In-100 is arriving tomorrow.

This skimmer is replacing a Coralife SS 125 and I cannot wait. So far the SS 125 has been my disappointing purchase and I am ready for it to be removed from my system.
 
Can someone help me with a porblem that I am having with my Gen 2 IN-180. I have micro-bubbles pouring out the outlet pipe. I dont mean a couple, I mean alot. I tried adjusting water in skimmer, controlling air flow, everything. My skimmer sits in about 8" of water and has been running for about 3 months. This issue just started about 4 days ago and since I can adjust the water height within the skimmer but the skimmate is extremely dry. And the skimmer hasnt pulled much since.
 
check hole were the air goes into pump sometimes salt creep will build up there were air meats water and will slow air flow and increase water flow which will push more bubbles out of outflow of skimmer tube. I just removed both air lines on both my skimmers and one was 70 percent blocked.
 
I was starting to research skimmers, for a 90g + 20g Sump (110g system). I want an effective skimmer, quiet, and efficient (watts). Second to that I am concerned with the footprint, although since I'm early in my planning, I could accommodate a change here. I won't say price doesn't matter, but it's less of a concern that the noise and power usage. So... I'm considering a Vertex.

With everyone's experience here, would they recommend the IN-100 or the IN-180 with a 110g system?
