Vertex Skimmer club

Finally got the IN80 in sump with the tunze 9410.040. The pump was very loud at start up (supposed to be quiet) so I inspected everything and fired it up again. Still loud!

Not a big deal for me as I have insul foam in the cabinet but for others it may be a problem. The bubbles are intense! I have the air dailed back 3/4 right now with the wedge pipe wide open. Looking good so far after 8 hrs (will post pics soon). I have my water level at 9 inches and will most likely bring it down to at least 8 so I can open the air up more.

I wont be able to get pics up till monday.

Tivo, that's crazy about the Tunze being loud. Did you figure it out yet?

It also could just be that the connection to the skimmer is directly attached (ie it goes directly to the skimmer housing) and that makes the whole skimmer vibrate

I actually am using it with the elbow like the resun pump is set up.

The pump has a ton of torque so the noise is definately resonance vibration. It is as loud as the resun was if not a little more! I also have a 9410.040 hydrofoamer on a 9410 DOC skimmer and it is pretty loud too. Not as loud as this set up but still audible. There is not much I can do at this point except maybe getting some rubber feet or something like that to dampen the vibration. If I use some egg crate it will help but the skimmer is pretty tall as it is so I'd like to stay away from that option if I can.

Wouldn't be the first time I did something wrong, so I'll keep checking this weekend.

The skimmer is milked out twice as much as before, so the performance should be a marked improvement.

Vertex IN180 on its way for my 60g display 40g sump + dual 15g frag tank linked system. Going to replace the stock pump with the BB3000 right off the bat, can't wait!

My Vertex 180 G2 with original pump already runs for 6 month. It was very loud at beginning. After played around it, it's very quite. I am very happy for it.

Is the BB3000 pump the best option for replacement for Vertex 180 ? I have G2 Vertex for little more then a year and it seems the pump is not working as good as used to. I was happy with it but I think it is time for upgrade, so is BB 3000 the best option or is there something else?

It may be too big. I am going to use one to replace my in280 pump.

Ward,
I have a 280 as well and still have the stock pump. I have look into replacement pump, just could not come up with the money right now but the 3000 maybe undersize for the IN280 I was looking at the 5000 to reeplce the pump. Anyhow, i just thought I'd say something.

I have a Vertex 180 and I am going to set it up on a 75 gallon tank... Anyone have any recs on how deep the skimmer should run in my sump, as well as the flow rate that would be best...?

Thnxs

What would make it too small? I think the air ratings are higher than the Vertex? The turn over as well. Let me know..

Ward,
I don't remember but when I called reef Specialty when these pumps first came out and told them my skimmer's body and neck size, they recommended the 5000. I believe there is somebody here, I can't remember the name, replaced his IN250 stock pump with 3000 and wished he had gone with the 5000. IN250 is 8" body with 4" neck just taller than the IN180. IN280 has 10" body and 5" neck, 3000 should work but if you can make it much better with the 5000 why not, right?
Again, I don't have any personal experience with these pumps, just telling you what I was told when I looked into it.

I used the BB 3000 on a IN250 and It's more than enough! I think the 5000 would cause too much turbulence in that body, But that's just my opinion.
I have the Super Octo XP5000 Cone so i speak from experiance, There's no way the 250 would handle that 5000 pump without constant overflowing.

It's a tough call guys..I too spoke to Reef Speacialty on Friday and was recommended the 5000..but once I mentioned that the air rating( it's twice what my vertex is) (scfh?) I think its called to the guy he said that the 3000 would be a better choice. I need to somehow figure this out for sure because once its modified to fit the Vertex I can't return it. I appreciate the help a lot

Ward,
Have you look into the dimensions of the skimmers the 5000 and 3000 are on? That would be a good baseline too as to what size pump would be better fit for the 280. I had to say something huh? Sorry if I had confuzed you, just trying to help.

It's kinda like apples and oranges trying to compare the 5000 which comes on a huge Cone skimmer to a Vertex type body they are just too different to compare. JMHO
Just a side note you do not have to modify the pump Itself in any way to make the swap, Just a piece of PVC pipe to make them connect together properly. The reason being there is a slight size difference on the plumbing from one to the other.
Bill:thumbsup:

Noel, no confusion and I really appreciate the feedback from both you and Bill..this is the research stage and it's part of the fun in the hobby to me..Bill, do you have any close up pics and or specific pipe info for me? that would be greatly appreciated.

oh yeah and I think the 250 and 280 use the same size pump so the side of the pipe that actually slides in to the skimmer body would be the same. From what I hear the BB comes with everything I need, just roatate the front assembly via the three screws and modify the pump and you're ready to go.

Ward,
Whichever pump you decide to go with, let us know the result. I know eventually i have to replace my stock pump. I really have my eyes set for the Askoll 1500 but if the BB is good then I'd go with it.

Bill,
Do yo have any pix of your 250 with the 3000?

Noel, I will for sure let you know. Probably do it as soon as I get done with my suplemental led project. I have looked in to the askoll and read lot and talked to some people about them .The Askoll was my original plan. Pls forgive me for my lack of terminology in the following: The reason I didn't go with the askoll was that it required a lot more modification. If you look at them on the net the circular housing on the front of motor itself has two air nipples for air lines. I guess one one would hook up to the line that is already there on the Vertex and the other is where all the mods start. Don't qoute me but I think second one is for another adjuster and also requires a silencer? Let me know if you have any knowledge on this..BTW I saw one of those BB pumps running on one of the display tanks at World Wide Corals and was super impressed!
