Vertex Skimmer club

I just got my in-100 up and running a couple weeks ago. It's doing a nice job so far, but it is pretty loud. I can't seem to get it any quieter. I am wondering if anyone has used the bb-1000 as a replacement pump. Would the bb-2000 be too much for this skimmer?

I almost went with the bb2000, though I think either would work great. With the bb2000 you'd probably have to have the wedge pipe nearly open all the way and the bb1000 would be similar to the stock vertex pump but much quieter and most likely better overall performance. This is my first skimmer so i guess I've gotten used to it.. But I've seen other skimmers, larger than mine that are much quieter. I tried to see if I could buy a vertex in100 gen2 (I still have gen1) body alone and then purchase a bb pump, but apparently vertext doesn't sell the bodies alone - and doesn't allow distributors to do so either. So, I think sometime within the next 6 months I may purchase the new Super Space Saver Octopus XP-1000SSS Cone Skimmer. We'll see.

Just went to Proline Aquatics online. My computer will not open the site because Google says it has a virus on it. Does anyone know how to contact them offline?

Albert was really helpful in getting me a replacement impeller assembly when mine was rattling.

I think I may give the bb1000 a shot when I've got a few extra bucks. The skimmer is doing a great job so far. I have it skimming dry and I have black coffee colored skimmate. If it were just a little quieter... That Octopus looks nice. I was looking at the swc skimmers last night. They also look pretty good. I got the vertex skimmer on sale for 160bucks a while back. So far I'm def. getting my money's worth, but I really should have been willing to drop at least 300bucks on a skimmer. oh well. live and learn.

Yeah I got the same deal on the GEN1 a while back (over a 1.5 years ago). At the time $200 was my peak for a skimmer so I'm happy with my decision.

Wow did those just come out or have I not been paying attention? I'm not exactly sure, but it looks like the bubble plate is modified and there's a thicker air line.

..looks like they just changed around the bubble plate... lowered it and added more (larger) holes.. On paper, I'm not a huge fan. Those holes look too large... but I do like that it's lower.

They added a larger air line as well because they commonly get clogged where the line connects to the wedge pipe.

this is a really long thread, it may have been brought up at some point but i would appreciate some help --

my In-80 has again stopped performing. it was working fine until i left it off out of the tank for 2 weeks while i got a new tank.

I need a new skimmer and while i originally thought to get one of the smaller cone skimmers out there i thought i might first try replacing the pump since the skimmer has done really well for me in the past.

what would you say is the best pump to get (need it to be quiet) and do you think replacing the pump could fix the nonperforming skimmer? currently the problem is it just overflows, even when 100% open. i've never had problems with skimmer before tank switch.

If you changed the sump, (cleaned it, cleaned the skimmer, etc...) you are going to require a break in period. As for the overflowing with the skimmer wide open, has the water level that the skimmer is sitting in changed? If it has become deeper I would consider putting it on a stand so that it is sitting in no more than 8" of water. The alternative is it could have a clogged air intake venturi. Remove it and give it a visual.

that's what i thought too but consider the following:

1) it's been 3 weeks. break-in period should be done by now. and it's not a new skimmer i've been using it for a year.

2) it's in the same sump it's always been in, i'm reusing sump on new tank

3) it's in 8 inches of water as it has always been

4) i've cleaned the skimmer pump twice now, no improvement - where's the venturi, maybe i'm missing it? i've taken out the spinning ceramic component

5) i've cleared the airline- not sure what else to try

so do you think a new pump could help?

whenever there's overflow issues, the first thing I always suggest is to look back and see if there were any chemicals/epoxy putty/frozen foods with vitamins added/anything related that could have been added to the tank. That's what happened to my skimmer a while back. I put a large amount of carbon in the tank and it solved the problem on its own.

Theyh usually overflow when the air line gets clogged. Have you tried checking this?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but could someone tell me the ID and OD of the air line hose for a IN-100(G2)? If you know where I can get some identical tubing by the foot, that would be perfect!

Thanks.

Re: Vertex Skimmer club

The carbon is a good idea. Thanks e I'll try it.

I have checked the airline. It seems to be clear.

So does anyone know what the ID (Inner Diameter) and OD (Outer Diamter) of the air-line hose is on the IN-100(G2)?

I am looking to extend the air intake out of my cramped in-stand sump area and pull air from above the tank, hopefully will be a little cleaner air (less CO2). Looking to somewhat mimic the CO2 scrubber concept to see if there is any benefit of this for my pH?

I did a 250 with a Bubble Blaster 3000 and it's a great upgrade! Since they are almost the same skimmer i would say your safe with that pump. Go back to around page 54 or so and you can get the details
