Vertex Skimmer club

Any idea what caused it to do this? Sorry to hear this. How long has it been running?

Been running a month or so. Compared to the new replacement I received (coralvue does have very good support) My original pump was alot noisier and vibrated more from day 1, thinking it was an out of balance impeller. New pump is running strong as we speak, what an improvement this has made to the Vertex skimmer :fun4:

I am going to hold you to the "Coralvue does a very good support" comment as I recently had my first problem with my bb3000 pump. Yesterday I was doing maintenance on my 125 and when I went to clean the skimmer, as soon as I touched the bb3000 the pump fell off the volute. The 3 screws that hold the volute to the pump were still in place, but the plastic around the screws broke, all 3.

I just emailed these pics to support@coralvue.com

Just curious, I noticed your bottom plate that the pumps sits on was missing. Was your pump mounted without any support? Under the pump that could have put extra strain on the Volute part of the pump. I also removed my plate but replaced it with rubber pad to support the pump on the skimmer body. There also seems to be a lot of rust in the screw areas where it broke off, I think i will pull mine out and Inspect the pump as It's been in the water since the day i bought it (Many months ago)
I'm sure David will replace your pump as their C/S is very good! Sucks when things go wrong but nothing is perfect, After all It's made by Humans...:crazy1:

You are correct poolkeeper, nothing is perfect. I am not upset by any means. The bubble blaster has been a solid performer since day one and I'm glad it came with the 3 year warranty. I did not have the stand underneath the pump, but I asked CV about it when I installed it last November and they said it fine to run the pump suspended. I do believe that running the pump with out a stand put extra strain on the plastic volute. My next step it to make a stand for the pump. Eggcrate or rubber pads? I also noticed my screws had been rusting.

I already got a response from CV. This is what they said:

"Sorry for the trouble. That is definitely bizarre. I am sending you a new volute and some new screws. We changed suppliers of our screws as some we found were rusting as I can see yours are. We have titanium screws from a different supplier that are much better quality."

Pretty solid cs if you ask me.

Cheers.

Yeah Buddy, Great service as I thought they would. That's good to know they said it was OK to run the pump suspended, But a rubber pad is easy to throw under the pump for a little extra support, Plus it kept the vibrations unnoticable.
Glad it all worked out for you.

I noticed one of my rubber feet had worked it's way off somehow when doing maintenance today. I decided to try removing the support and placing the pump on a vibration pad that came with a Mag pump that I had laying around in it's place. Wow, it really killed that humming noise! The pad is the same height as the pump stand so it worked out well.

Rubber Pad

Rubber Pad

What type of pads are you guys using?

I think the one i used came with a Quiet one 6000 pump that I had laying around. But any rubber pad will work just cut to size and around 3/8 - 1/2" thick. I have both the 3000 and 5000 and both of them kinda Vibrate some what without the pad or stock foot on them, Just a quirk of these pumps but nothing that i can't live with Can't hear it anyway...

You should be able to rotate the volute a hundred and eighty degrees. The just pull the impeller straight out of the pump.

Vertex=Amazing Skimmer handsdown!!

Vertex=Amazing Skimmer handsdown!!

Tangtang clown, first off, I'm not sure if you're aware, but rust in a saltwater tank is very very BAD! :eek1: I can't believe from your photos. You would think they would use stainless steal screws or none at all!! I dropped metal in my tank and all my corals closed up..some died and fish were breathing very heavy. I actually owned an xp 3000 cone skimmer from CV and was not pleased on the performance. I had to constantly tinker with the output. The foam production was not stable. The Bubble blaster 3000 pump was extremely noisy. I sold it and bought a Vertex IN 180 "gen 3" and I'm extremely happy with the performance! The foam head is always consistent, very dry foam, nastiest skimmate I've smelt it looks like a cup of black coffee. Everything I wanted in a skimmer, a truly set and forget. Cone skimmers are very hyped up by companies and can't come close to the EuroReef Style skimmers! IMHO The contact time of the bubbles is far decreased with the cone and not a believer in them. The Vertex immediately started skimming from day one unlike the xp 3000 cone. I called up ReefSpecialty and they gave me the Mc Donald speech, "it takes a couple weeks to break in!" Total and utter BS! Skimmers are supposed to start skimming right away. I called the owner of RS up and had him talk me through the setup to make sure everything was right and still loud, weak foam production. They tell me you have to rate the skimmer to the properly sized tank also. When have you ever had to rate a skimmer to the size of the tank...NEVER. Get the largest skimmer on your budget is what I've been told by countless experienced hobbiest. I'm not a believe in the cone skimmers, "at least the Super Reef Octopus for that matter and hope people do research before purchasing". I keep hearing complaints about Coral Vues skimmers. Vertex has served me very well and have nothing but good things to say. Very solidly built unit with silent/strong pump, quality construction, bubble plate, silencer, drain for collection cup. Beautiful skimmer!!

SaltwaterAdict-what kind of pump are they using in the Gen 3? Have they upgraded the stock Resun pump, or maybe a different impellar?

I guess were all mistaken in our observations of our skimmers! Since i have had every skimmer mentioned above i think i can comment on them all. Super reef XP cones for the money are the best buy for my money and Vertex is a good skimmer once you get a pump on it that is reliable and consistent. The Resun pumps are not in that category and never will be until they change the design. Over the course of thirty years I've had all kinds of metal objects fall into my tank, The only metal i would worry about would be copper as it is harmful but most others in moderation are harmless. Some like Iron are actually good for Algae growth.
And the nonsense about skimmers working right out of the box, Yes they will but will do much better after the Pinwheel slimes up with Bacteria along with the rest of the skimmer. The statement that skimmers should not be rated well that's just silly, Guess I'll throw a IN 280 on my 3gal pico should do great!
Coralvue (Vue Technologies) sells more skimmers than most any other Co out there and it's not because they don't work, Every one I've ever had worked very well as a matter of fact the XP 5000 cone is one of the best out there for the price range you can not beat it.
Also want to state i have no stake in either one of these Co's just my personal observations.
Every one's entitled to their opinion and here's mine!

Saltwater and pool. Thanks for the input! I hope these new titanium screws will be better. Does anyone have pics of their vertex running with a "non stock" pump?
