Vertex Skimmer club

hey poolkeeper this is the vertex thread not i - tech thread. As far as vertex 250 goes i'm sure i read somewhere that the vertex 280 was better skimmer than 250

no pump issues with gen 1 or gen 3 models just alot of nasty dark skimmate

My IN 250 was a gen 1 and I had to replace 2 pumps B4 i switched to the Bubble Blaster Pump to make my Vertex reliable and qiut flooding my floor. Any one who has followed this thread from the beginning knows that. As far as posting in this thread, I'll refrain from commenting on that. Best reguards.

i like the $289 price I found for the IN-250 and guys, there are a lot of good skimmers, some are better than others, but there is no reason to get scrappy or bash a product you havnt tried... i personally like the fact that vertex is releasing upgraded versions, shows they care about the customer and moving foward. nothing in life is perfect... right? also its ok if a company uses some of another companies ideas, what shape skimmer body do you think they should use if not euroreets smooth transition, a hexagon or parallelagram or a rhombus... really wjy go away from what works... next thing you know those guys will start using those needle wheels in their pumps, those cheats!!! LOL really guys!

i think 250's to tall not stable compared to other models, i'm gonna try 180 gen 3 model for awhile then try swc 180 cone skimmer next. i get new skimmer every year.

i would be sick of flooded floors also, no hard feelings for switching, any advice on 250 model would be helpful for others asking about it since you have experience with it.

even the 180 models will flood once in a while but if you keep skimmer cup clean i don't have that problem. It seems that these skimmers get alot of build up on skimmer neck and if not cleaned regularly some falls off neck and into skimmer causing it to go nuts and skim over and flood.

I found it to be a pretty good skimmer once I put the BB 3000 pump on it and got the water depth correct. It has a well built body and for the price it's a good deal, As far as them improving them IMO that's all bogus until they adress the crappy pumps. I have had many great skimmers and the Vertex could easily be one of them once they get the right body/pump combo. IMO your money can be better spent on a stock Super Octo XP Cone skimmer, But that's just my take others will say different so you must decide for yourself. Personally I still like the Reeflo Pro Skimmers with the Baldor motors and Upgraded cup/Pinwheel, But I'm just old school at heart.

PS, No offense taken Hah!

neck

neck

by neck what part are you reffering to? the neck that comes off with the cup shaped like this: II or the smooth transition body to neck part... dont know that name but shaped like this: )(

pumps are the only bad part of skimmer but thats how they made it affordable for everyone. To get a nice vertex that kicks but you need to step up to alpha cones they got awesome pumps nice and quiet. Vertex just got budget skimmers and real good skimmers. Good design on body just got to research and install and better pump like either sicce or tunze hydro foamer or bb pump.

by neck i mean the top of skimmer cup were bubbles foam into cup, i have had 3/8 thick of sludge build up in 2 weeks. If not cleaned once a week that build up can fall into skimmer and make skimmer go nuts and flood real quick.

hands down best skimmer for the money has been the in 180 gen 2 owned 2 of them, never a pump issue, most issue's have been on the gen 1's and the 250's which to me was to tall of a skimmer for the pump and worked pump to hard. i've had 19 skimmer's now from er to bk for the in 180 to work solid you need a 120g to 180. this skimmer is just too much for anything under that,

180 pumped out lots of gunk on my 125 gallon when i first got it now its just steady, once full skimmer cup in almost 2 weeks instead of when i first added it i got full cup in 5 days. I think it can handle 125 gallon heavy stock pretty good, but my tank is softie tanks also.

my in-100 gen 2 has been reliable and pretty quiet. No overflows that weren't the fault of my ato. I've been very impressed with the skimmer. I got it on sale for 160 bucks from md. My old aqua c remora with overflow box cost me more. If the gen 3 has solved the pump issues some people talk about, it should be a great skimmer, but as far as mine goes, there have been zero problems so far after 6mos.

Same pumps on them all

That's the problem, They all have the same crappy Resun pumps and they all have the potential for Major rust issues in the Motor block plus overflowing. If yours hasn't It's the exception not the rule.
Anyhoo, I have moved on and wish everyone great sucess in working out your issues with these skimmers. I-Tech's Rule Hehehehe See Ya

im trying to stay caaaalm

so i just got off the phone with vertex... there is no such thing as a generation 3. You are all mistaken. the ONLY thing that changed recently in the IN line of skimmers is the bubble plate is now made of clear acrylic as oppsed to black, not its size or shape or hole diameter or pump or ANYTHING else. the store that is advertising the gen 3's is either misleading folks OR more likely just mistaken. they need to contact their supplier. Also, the vertex IS basically a euroreef with a cheaper pump, it is sold as a decent skimmer at an affordable price, think Eurotech= Lexus, Acura, Infinity, Lincoln and the Vertex is = to a toyota, honda, nissan or ford. I drive a Chevy truck not a Hummer so im ok with that. wish me luck, i just ordered a Gen2 IN-250 ($289+freeshipping) and a Nextreef SMR1 with NP biopellets. I have 160gallon mixed reef with moderate to heavy bioload fed twice a day.
