Vertex Skimmer club

Yea pull out the impeller and take a look at the pinwheel make sure teh front face isnt worn. I have to go post my 180 up in the sale section another new one coming in. Skimmer is working well though.

Well I got it running again but it crapped out after 2 hrs. I guess I will call P.A. on Monday and see what they say. For the short time it ran it was making some nice foam.

They will send you a new pin wheel or shaft most likely. when you had it apart dod the pinwheels assembly turn on the shaft ok? every now and then you get a bad shaft where it will swell. but also check the front of the pinwheel to make sure it wasnt wearing into the volute cover. I have seen this happen on skimmer pumps as well. Be sure to replace the plastic spacer that is in front and behind the pinwheel assembly when putting the pinwheel assembly back together.

Update on my Vertex In-80:

doing well, pulling out some nice stuff for it's 1 week break-in time and my low bioload.

give it a little time looks like alot is building in the neck. Maybe raise it a little if you havent already. Sounds like you are happy with it. right?

Cool, thanks for the tip. I also didn't know I was supposed to clean it every few days so that contributed to the buildup. I just cleaned it. Thanks for the tip on raising the level. I think I want a dry skimmate if I can but might have to go somewhere between what it is now and something wetter to get it out of the neck.

Yeah I'm very happy with it. If I can learn something to use it better that's always cool too!

I dont ever clean my pumps but most skimmers don't make it more than a couple weeks. But I Would probably check my skimmer pump about once ever 6 months for wear.

I clean the collection cup inside and out with cold freshwater in my tub once every waterchange (about once a week). All I do is run water through it and rub off any gunk with my hands. I have my sweetspot marked on the wedgepipe so I just "open" it all the way and pull the collection cup off, clean it, put it back on and move the wedgepipe back to it's good spot, takes about 5 maybe 10 minutes. I also empty the skimmate out into a cup before I do this.

bj, not to be rude but I would have gone with the 250 if you're going to be running it on your 180g. I still think you'll be pleased with the performance, it just might not be able to keep up completely.

the 250 was too tall....
I have a light bioload so it should be fine

up until now I have not been running a skimmer aside for a few months with the asm...the tank is two years old

Yeah the 250 is a beast. Well since you have a light bioload and haven't had a skimmer on there too long there's no doubt in my mind you'll be pleased and the inhabitants of the tank will be too. Give us an update when you can. :)

Well P.A sent me out a new impeller shaft and I got it today. Skimer has been running for about 8 hrs with no problem and already pulling a nice skimmate. Thank you Premium Aquatics.

Agreed, they'll match prices and shipping deals, answer questions on the same day numerous times; they run their website VERY well and know and know what the heck they're doing.

Which Model?

Which Model?

Hey Guys,
I've been reading through the posts and am about to pull the
trigger on a new vertex.

What would you guys recommend for a 135g tank, with 20g
refugium and about 20g of water in sump?
Right now I have a powder blue tang, blue tang, golden butterfly,
pair of percula's, diamond spotted goby, royal gramma, 7 green
chromis and various soft and lps corals and inverts.. There's also
about 150lbs of live rock. I got the tank and stock from craigslist
and it came with an ASM G-1X skimmer. Considering I'm doing
weekly water changes and can't get the Nitrates under 20ppm,
I don't think the skimmer is adequate.

I want to get the in-250, but not sure about the overhead clearance.
PA has the height at 30" but the Vertex site lists it at 31"1/2.
Since I have a hair under 32 inches available, the distinction is pretty important.
If it doesn't fit, you think the in-180 would be able to keep up?
I'd rather be way overrated than under with a skimmer.

Was also looking at the MSX200, but would rather have a plug
and play skimmer, rather than deal with enkmat mesh mods.
