Vertex Skimmer club

Still reading on page 15 but I got my IN 180 Tuesday. BIG. Replacing an Excaliber on a 125 reef with a 40 sump. Ran it in freshwater and vineger last night to clean it. Hope to get it in the sump tonight. Bought it from Marine Depot on sale. Read a lot of Mojo's posts and decided this will be the best bang for the buck. Will see soon. Thanks for all the information you guys are giving.

Here is a great pic.

I have always owned a skimmer, although my last was a coralife 125...I know, I know.
Anyway, I always rinse my phosphate reactor media prior to putting it in the reactor although there is always some fine particulate that is created...

I changed it media yesterday and the particles of the media can be seen in the skimmer! The red/brown stuff.

Alright guys, I just bought a used in80 gen 2 off of someone on RC, and I have a question. Im sure its been answered but its a long thread. My skimmer section of my sump runs at 10 1/2 inches. I only have 24inches of space to work with under the tank so I dont think I can really raise the skimmer any because its 21 1/2 inches and I need to take out the cup. Will it run well in that deep of water? Or do I need to cut down my baffle on my sump, which means drilling holes in the baffle of a running sump, or making endless scores with a razor blade or something. Any thoughs are well appreciated.

Sounds like a PITA!
Raise it as much as you can, you'll get your best results in 7-8" of water. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like you'll make it, but maybe you could get to 9"?? Good luck.

Has anyone noticed the skimmer appears to work much better with airline connected to silencer..?? On quite a few of my previous skimmers , this really did not make much of a difference, This skimmer really seems to need the it connected.

Does the connector to wedge valve need cleaning often? It seems like it will and I really see no easy way to clean.

BTW, not picking, Just learning  I do like this 180gen2!

Ricky :) don't post it!

I have to have the internal water height a little above the first black ring for the foam to reach the top. If right on the black ring, the foam only reaches about half way up the tube. Of course, that may change as it settles more.

Let's see pictures of everyone's water line. :-)
(I'll eat my own dog food and get a photo soon)

Any pic's? Whats going on with it?

Well now I like it without silencer connected :D

I'm a complete novice jumping in with a 215gal tank. I want to thank all of you on this Vertex thread for the wealth of information. Especially Mojo. Now I I've joined the club with Vertex 250. I might have more to say when my tank has water in it.

Is there anyone that has a old pin/w for 180, I would love to make a meshwheel for my new skimmer but I believe a used one may be better than 40$ plus shipping at PA..

I think this skimmer can easily handle 50+ scfh..
