I'm not a believer in filter socks. If it were me I would not incorporate it into my system. Reason being, they will trap fish poop that the skimmer would take out. The sock will hold all the poop/uneaten fish food until you clean it out. Eventually cleaning it out everyday will put a burden on you and you'll probably clean it less often. Definitely a lot of work. You could have your skimmer take it directly out of the system and not have it sitting around in a sock, inevitably rotting and causing high nitrates.

This video will prove that buying a different pump to have the skimmer work more effectively is not true. These manufactures design the pumps specifically for the skimmers themselves and they will do a better job rather than trying to oversize the pump. I know people are always looking to have things work better on there tanks and get better results, but it's not necessary. This is a stock pump and you will see how it takes everything that this guy pours into the tank right out. Note: he doesn't have a couple hundred dollar pump, it is the 'stock' pump. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygFycA6MsQo&feature=channel :bounce2::bounce3::bounce1:

just how? Does this Video prove anything you are stating? It shows a skimmer (With a Filter Sock on the Output tube) Collecting dirt poured into a small tank, Nothing more!
On the other hand If i wanted to oversize the pump on my skimmer I would have put a BB 5000 verses the 3000 which pushes LESS water and USES LESS Power than the Stock Pump.
So according to your Logic I have Improved My Skimmer for the Better, But from Skimate production and reliability I already knew that.
Gotta Go but I will respond to the rest of your claims later.

if you have the room there is a upgrade skimmer cup for swc 160 cone, its 4 inches taller than standard cup so you get more contact time for you bubbles.

i make sure to clean skimmer cup once a week on weekend, if you slack on skimmer cup cleaning you will see the difference in your tank. I know been working to much overtime and have seen hair algae starting back up in my tank.

How many ships you think were sunk just in WW 2 alone or lets say from the beginning of time, Not counting all the rocks containing those same minerals that lay on the bottom of the Ocean.
A funny picture in my head is of a rusted out sunken (Steel) ship just covered in Coral of every kind, Guess they don't know they are supposed to be dead from the ocean crashing. LOL:dance:

LOL!!! OK, your logic on how many ships were sunk in WW2 is just ridiculous. The ocean is a HUGE body of water and the amount of water compared to what little ships sunk will not have an impact because they are diluted easily. We have closed loop systems and that's why you'll hear people say never to introduce soap into your tank or never work on your tank after you used lotion. You act as if our tanks are these huge volumes of water and that's obviously not the case :lmao: U want to take the risk go ahead by all means I'm not stopping you, but for others I'll let the know that it is nonsense to gamble with your livestock. Be my guest go toss some screws in your tank and have a field day! I'm done with this nonsense....

The little nuts will be diluted just the same as the ships in the Ocean, Fact being I'm happy to throw some nuts In my tank. But like you said I'm done with this too. Happy Reefing

Why not create a "Rust Myth Buster" thread? Take a 5-10 gallon tank, set it up for some corals or snails, and throw in some rusty nails? Time will tell :)

Already did that to my Display tank, I am confident there will be no harm!

You do of course realize that Resun pumps have had rust problems for years now? The heatsink in the back of the pump has had rust problems that are still there to this day.

When you take the back plate off, this is what you get:

Wow, thanks for the post I'll be sure to keep my eye out. Maybe it was a bad pump because I searched and haven't found a thread where this happened to several people. Could be a bad pump? What would cause that to happen because I have maxijets and other pumps for a long time and never had an issue with taking off the face and discovering something like this??

As I posted previously, this rust issue has been going on for many years. Euro-Reef had problems, Aqua-Euro also with these pumps. There is a metal heatsink in the rear of the pump that can rust. The plate that covers it will not keep this from happening. Euro-Reef started to have their pumps heatsink coated to reduce this problem. I think it helped some, but they still had issues. Even if you coat a metal plate, you still have a potential for it to rust. I dont know if Vertex Resun pumps have any coating or sealing of this heatsink. Why a metal heatsink is needed on a submersible pump is beyond me. Bad design.

As far as what to look for, without removing the rear cover, look for rust leaking out of the pump at the rear of the pump or rust stains on the exterior.

I have the Vertex Alpha 170 Cone with Red Dragon pump. I cannot figure out the twisting of the intake nozzle on the pump. All that I can tell is that it raises or lowers the water level in the neck, just like the riser tube does. What can I dial in with the nozzle of the pump intake?

The adjustable nozzle regulates the air and water mix. The more you have it screwed in the less air it takes in. I would suggest you look at the Alpha Cone Skimmer thread under the Premium Aquatics forum for more info. Jeremy has been awesome at addressing reefer's questions regarding these skimmers.

Good Luck

D'oh! I always thought it was way overkill for your tank, and respect your decision in going with something smaller, pk1.

Just wanted to report that my Vertex IN-250 w/modded Laguna/Askoll 1500 (Red Dragon) pump is doing great. I have the pumps intake about 2.5" below the surface of the water, and the body of the skimmer is about 9" submerged. I had to use a stand to elevate the skimmer a couple of inches because I didn't feel like modifying the baffles, or rebuilding a sump. I tried to use it without the stand, and it blew the top off! Good thing I was prepared for that.

For the price, the skimmer itself is great. The pump I got was junk, though. Stalled a lot, and pretty flimsy.
