VHO's

You don't hear too much about vho's unless you are talking about using them with mh's. My question is will 4 110 watt vho's on a 55g be strong enough to have hard corals and clams? The vho's are just so much cheaper than mh's. Is this worth trying or should I just save for mh's? Thanks

price is actually about the same compared to VHO's
4 VHO bulbs cost around $100
2 MH bulbs around $120

don't skimp on the lights, get the MH
(2) 175's or 250"s should work

There's a lot more there than just price of bulbs. The VHO's are less expensive and yes you can keep LPS and some clams with 440 watts of VHO.

There is a thread on RC that has pics of VHO lit reef tanks. Look through the thread. You'll be pleasantly surprised with what you can keep running VHO's.

i have vhos at the moment. now that i added mhs. even the fish look better under halides. vhos are great but on ebay you can get 2 250s setup with bulbs for around 270 shipped with 14 k bulbs and i think you will be much happier. thats my opinion. im thinking of going halides all the way.
using my 2 x 175s for the dawn and dusk and 2 x250s for daylight. i just like the way my tank looks with halides . its so cool to see my flame angel swim accross along with her shadow. and my regal tang looks so cool. also my corals in my opinon look better.
